Both mad, and sad

Post by stipro »

Today started out positive and on the happy side, but as the day progressed, not so good.

I went to work on my rally car project today, its a 91 ss. All of the body work is just about complete, save for the rear quarters. They were pretty rusted out, no big deal I thought, its not the first time I have repaired rusty quarters on a legacy.

So I start cutting out the rusty stuff, and get to the bottom of the dog-legs. Underneath the pinch weld was crushed and rusty, but looked solid. I took out the saw-z-all to cut open the bottom of the rocker, and there inside was nothing. Completely rotted away. There are bolts going through there to fasten rear suspension parts. Not very safe, or strong enough to build up. What do I do??? My dream of having this rally car done for next year is shot.

I dont think I can do anymore on this car, all I can do is save up the parts and wait. I need to find a donor car, for cheap. All I need is the body. Where do I find one of those??

Just thinking out loud. Im a little sad right now. I guess I will keep looking.

aw :( head out to a junkyard and cut out the piece you need, sand it, then weld it up.

Oh no, its worse than that. I am worried about the structural integrity. There isnt alot of metal, that isnt rusted, to weld to. I already have the pieces I need, but its not gonna help this situation. Its really awful.

Or possibly fab some suspension mounting points out of some 1/16" strap and build the body up from there with donor parts?

maybe it is a good excuse to tie those mounting points into the cage with some tube(that is if you have a cage in it yet). I assume that if you can do rust repair on a legacy shell that youre a pretty good welder, that stuff is so damn thin. if the area where the bolts mount to is semi solid you could pull the bolts, tack a 3x3 or so piece of some 1/8-1/4 plate with the right size hole, and run some tube from the cage to the plate at a couple points in a triangle, tack to the shell as much as you want.

if it comes down to getting a new shell maybe you should look west or south to the states. here in CO a non running legacy is cheap as dirt and many are rust free. I'd imagine most in your area are in the same shape as yours, and the ones that arent are either expensive or bent or something.

Sorry man, that totally sucks. I was even thinking about walking away from my legacy when I really started looking at the rust on the rears.......

I think it will be really hard to find a decent shell in this city. All are rusty. Mine was rusty and it wasn't even cheap

I'll keep my eyes open. Maybe a trip to Van is in order... or Montana? Do you need a Turbo for tranny fitment etc? or do L's have the potential to accept all that you want to donate into it?

BTW UPS situation got worse......   I'll PM you

Well I think I may have jumped to conclusions, not sure, but I had a second opinion from a friend. The damage/rust might be fixable. Lets see what happens in the next week or so.

I was really pissed-off when I posted this. Rational has taken a small grip on the situation.
