Handbrake light stayed on.. again!

Post by Ricky »

Ok, this morning, there was no frost.. unlike last time.. this time
its just rain.. i started the car, release the handbrake.. handbrake
light stayed on.. it did that for 2 days straight now.. both times
only in the morning.. i restarted the car after around 20minutes of
driving and see if that light would go off. and it did!!! i didn't
even touch the handbrake when i restarted the car.. so it musn't be
the handbrake cable sticking with moisture... i read in the
instruction mannual that if ur brake fluid level is low, that light
would also go on.. i checked my brake fluid and its just slightly
below were the MAX line is and still a lot higher than the MIN line..
so i still can't figure out whats causing this!!

does brake fluid level go lower if its cold.. because it never
happens in the afternoon.. the handbrake light always turns off if i
keep the car in my garage or if i start the car in the afternoon...

also, the DRL does not turn on when my handbrake is fully down but
the handbrake warning light is still on.. if its just low brake
fluid, does it also leave the DRL off?

It's not brake fluid. The handbrake cable is sticking. You should either try to lube it or replace it. It's hard to say too....where it's sticking. It may be in the cable or more towards the back of the car where the cable goes into the parking brake housing.

Honestly I don't know how hard it would be to take off the cable. I sorta think it's one of those things where it's sealed and it's going to be hard if not impossible to take inner cable out of the sheathing to lube it. You can try just squirting some WD-40 type lube in one end and see if it will flow down and you can work it loose a little, but that will probably will only temporarily solve the problem.

Handbrake light stayed on.. again!

Post by Mark Ward »

Ricky,
Why dont you jack up the car, and take off a wheel and have someone engage
and disengage the handbrake. Have a look to see if you are indeed getting
brake release before you take apart the cable? What if the problem is a
break in the wire from the trigger switch that is only coming on when there
is enough moisture to ground it? Dont forget that the e-brake sensor is a
grounding switch that when you pull up the ebrake, it completes the circuit
and tells the computer your e-brake is on.

PS, I bought another set of Toyo Observes if you want to borrow them for the
novice rally on April 1st. I now have 3 complete sets of tires and rims for
the car.

Handbrake light stayed on.. again!

Post by Ricky »

Now it seems to get weirder...... i didn't pull the handbrake at all
this morning.. so of course the handbrake light didn't come on...
when i back out of my driveway, i noticed noticed that the light
turned on!!!! i don't know if it was when i started to move reverse
or if it was when i stepped on the brake.. weird thing is.. it only
does that in the morning!!!

does that light also tell when the ebrake shoes are worn out??? i dun
use the ebrake to do drifts, etc. so i dun think it should wear that
fast...

also, seems like my front pads are almost all gone.. when i brake
down to around 20km/h, there is this grinding sound.. wondering if
that could also cause the brake light to come on...

It sounds like your rear parking brake shoes could be too tite or the cable is just not letting go enough and they are not retracting all the way. I think you should take a look at or have all your brakes checked out, fronts and this parking brake thing.

Handbrake light stayed on.. again!

Post by Ricky »

Thx. i will replace my pads and let my mechnic check out my rotors to
see if they need machining next week. and then when he changes rear
brake pad, should be pretty easy to check the rear brake shoe with
the caliper off...

it doesn't seem to be that its sticking because even when i didn't
put my handbrake on this morning, the light came on when i started
backing out of my driveway.... anyways, i will ask my mechanic to
check out the Ebrake line sensor while hes at it..

I do beleave that the emergency brakes on our legacys are a small set of shoes on the inside middle of the rear rotors, so to check them he'll pr0obably have to pull the rotors.

maybe the switch by the hand lever itself is sticking, or has someone
already said that? I dunno. I just want this week to be over... ugh!
