pacific northwest
hello, i am from maine and i have been considering moving somewhere far away. I have no ties to this area and the prospect of moving somewhere new is very tempting. I noticed there are many members here from oregon/washington and that is an area that has always intregued me. What sort of advice or opinions do you guys have of this region?

The northwest is great, it rains a bit here, some places more than others, depends on what part of the northwest you move to. I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, about 60 miles south of Portland. We average about 50 inches of rain a year, not a whole lot of snow though, usually snows at least once a winter, sometimes twice. Lots of Subarus here, it's an hour or so to the coast, and an hour and a half or so to the Cascades (There are at least two ski resorts less than 2 hours from here, maybe more) I've lived here since 95, and I've been happy, the rain does kinda suck but as long as I have some place dry to work on my cars I'm happy
I'll let others chime in and tell about the areas of the northwest they live in, now that I've spouted off about mine.

depends on what kind of stuff youre into and what you do for work. its a good area of the country, I like it more than maine. it's very green year round. awesome mild summers, never gets too cold in the winter but it rains a LOT in the winter. if you are outdoorsy at all there is lots to do, lots of great backpacking and stuff. in some mountain areas there is occaisionally awesome snow(mt baker, stevens pass, mt hood, etc) but a lot of the time is cascade concrete. when it is cold there are some awesome dumps. stevens and baker have some sick backcountry.
the cities are kinda expensive to live in. seattle is turning into yuppie hell, lots of gentrification going on. portland seems like a cool ass place but I havent spent much time there.

If you're into outrageous property taxes, horrible traffic, and class discrimitation, then Seattle's your town. Also great if you like overpriced sweetened coffee.
But seriously, there are some decent places to live 'round here. And some amazing scenery. Definately a good place to live if you like outdoorsy activities.

Guys, it doesn't rain THAT much. It just gets miserable and looks like it's going to. If you don't mind the weather turning you into a serial killer, the NW is a great place to live, but my advice is stay out of WA. That state sucks, trust me, there's a reason I moved out of it. Although the driving roads and wet conditions make driving a subie alot more worthwhile.
It is expensive to live there, that is the truth.
Portland is a nice city, and I don't think its too hard to find a decent job and a place to live. The people are great, too. I prefer them over seattlites.

you should go to Owensboro so im not the only subie around
you definitely dont have to worry about rain, we ended a sever drought about 2 weeks ago with a tornado that went through downtown
if the 105* summer doest get you, or the drought, or the sever flooding or tornadoes, then youll probably die of boredom

IT SUCKS HERE!!!!!!
Generally speaking, the people who like it here have a disease or have never lived anywhere else.
The weather sucks, the people suck ( minus the subie guy of course) and did I mention the weather sucks.

We do have fantastic summers though, although this year we didnt really have a summer, it rained a lot during the summer.
And Washington should be called the Peoples Republic of Washington! Yeah it is that socialistic!
Oregon aint any better,
The PacNW moto should be " Save the planet! Kill Yourself!!!"

The comments really show the true nature of the NW.
Hehe this is my 400th post lol
And this place is so effing anti growth it is ridiculous!
The freeways are packed so what does portland do.
Oh Gee I dunno lets add more MAX so less people in a month will use it than will use a new lane on I205 in ONE DAY!!!
They waste so much money on their precious Public Transpo when we need more effing freeway lanes!
Right as you get to the Freemont Bridge there is a part of the freeway that just ends into thin air... That was a bridge that was supposed to lead to a freeway to Mt Hood, well the stupid ass governor, last minute, after all the funding was done, decided to cancel it, I mean WTF!!!
I guess I need to stop edditing this post...

Tax is higher... WAY higher, gas is HELLA more and housing is through the to the sky... and the main highway leading through Vancouver is only 2-3 lanes each side at best...
But if your big into snowboarding and or skiing... its the best place to live in North America... if you have the money

Holy crap, you live in Albany? I "live" there when I'm not at school! We should meet up next time I'm in town.Hondasucks wrote:The northwest is great, it rains a bit here, some places more than others, depends on what part of the northwest you move to. The northwest is a fantasticly weather-diverse place. Oregon itself has basically every type of climate you can find in the US. Southern Oregon has the deserts and highlands, then northern Oregon has the wet forest lands, etc.
I haven't lived in too many other places, but I lived on the east coast big-city areas. It's quite a bit different from there, even in our big cities.
If you don't like the rain, don't bother coming here. If you want really really beautiful scenery, Oregon probably isn't your best bet. The best scenery in Oregon is in the middle of nowhere. If you don't like farmers/tokers/hicks/rednecks, stay away, as they seem to make up more than 90% of the population.
There aren't many reasons to move out here, really, but I haven't lived in Portland or Seattle... maybe they have reasons for you.

Man, the PNW is great...don't listen to all the haters...I've been around the country and world, and I am always happy to come back to Oregon...except of course when I am in New Zealand (but it is very much like Oregon)
Come on over...you have a couch here if need be.

its been a somewhat shitty season so far in summit county but the durango-silverton area got hit pretty good. no big dumps to speak of yet out here.tris91ricer wrote:Beatersubi, I miss you guys, too. I love you Westies talking to a New Englander about weather diversity! He's from Portland, ME - the mountains are a couple hours or less and he's on the ocean. The roads suck here and the weather's been known to drop 30* in less than an hour (from 70 to 40 once). Scenery's nice and you have areas of yuppies, hippies, and rednecks depending on where you go. It's not exactly the same, but really not terribly different. Your climate's more temperate.

I almost did the same thing myself about 10 years ago. Ended up writing a book based on what sort of, could have happened if I had instead.

Within a 100mi. radius we have an oceanic sound, rain forest, volcanic mountain range, and desert. Within a 50mi. radius houses range from multi-million$ to modulars. Last weekend it was snowing, and its been in the high forties/ low fifties at night the last couple days (in the lowlands).
Although, from what I understand, most Maine-ites are at least a little off their rocker.

We call them "Maniacs", but where he is there are a lot of Massholes who moved there for the (somewhat) cheaper home prices still within what they consider Boston commuting distance.
