Hi Tom welcome to the list and the secret world of Turbo Legacys. I have an
auto trans and so I speak from experience. The trans kicks A when it's in
good shape. Mine started to act funny about a year ago. It would NOT
deliver enough torque at idle to make the car creep forward, and the rpm's
would come up to 1500 when pulling out then it would grab like I had popped
it into gear from neutral. I took it to a Subie dealer that had the
equipment to do a diagnostic (not all do) and got an idea of what kind of
problem it had. Since the dealer only sells newly reconditioned units for
about FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5000) I phoned salvage yards all over the
country. Prices ranged from the high hundreds to a couple grand. Finally, I
found a little local mom and pop trans shop, where a little old Asian guy
that could hardly speak English was able to give me the right answers to
questions I already knew the answers to. We settled on a rebuild for $1000.
It's still kicking A. I have to say that the most knowledgeable rebuilder
people I found in my phone search were Colorado Component Rebuilders. They
specialize in Subaru. Here's their website. They probably have your engine
and trans.

Mine still shifts hard into every gear, so here's hoping it stays
alive for a year or so.
When are you going to get me some pics of your wagon for Turbo-
Centric Larry?
