I remember a while back near the beginning of this group, we had a
discussion on swapping to 2.5 heads on the 2.2 Turbo block; this may have
been before you signed up Ron.

Which heads did we decide were the best (flow, lifters, etc)? Because that
might be a great option to do while you have the engine apart.. eqivilent
of a 22b in a legacy turbo? that'd be sweeeeet!

>>>>Got my crankshaft and cams into the shop for measure and polish. It
was confirmed that they are still within spec and have been polished
up. Ordered new bearings from the shop, they only wanted around $130
for both mains and connecting rods, whereas through the dealer I was
looking at around $500, go figure! Also ordered a new oil pump,
figure if I am going to put all this work into this baby, I DON'T
want to have an oil pump failure. Hopefully, I will get all this back
by Friday and I can start putting the bottom end together this
weekend.

Checked out my valve lash adjusters and I have a few that were stuck
in the pumped up position, I had to insert a small punch into the
rear to release the oil. Hmmm… this is interesting. I wonder if they
are gummed up, at this point I am torn between just replacing them
all or keeping the ones that pass the pump up test as outlined in the
manual. Next step is to port and polish my heads, I will be looking
into sending them out vs. doing it myself.

That's the status so far, I will try to take some digital pictures of
the process, I hope it will be informative!

I know the RS heads will fit on just fine, Byron's Impreza has the
EJ22T block with SOHC RS heads on top.

Now, i'm not going to get in any argument about SOHC vs DOHC, but
Trey from Cobb Tuning has a great thread on the i-club about which is
better/worse, advantages/disadvantages.

Basically he says DOHC is NOT better, they've both got great
attributes and some weaknesses.

An SOHC swap would be very nice, but finding a good set of heads from
an engine that's been around for less than 2 years might be hard,
especially at a reasonable price!

No kidding, finding them will be the hard part. Keep you eyes out for
freshly (shudder) totaled subies! I just read about the heads on the
Cobb tuning site. Seems that the SOHC has roller rockers which is
probably the main reason they are better, but it also said that the
springs are weak and if you are going to run high turbo boost you
will want to get stiffer springs. I am still reading up on this, but
I will keep my eyes out for donor cars.
