2.0 WRX head swap for Aussie Liberty/US Legacy?

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Hi Ross, you asked "Does anyone know whether I could put 2.2 Legacy Turbo
heads or 2.5 Legacy/Impreza heads on my 2.0 Liberty block? Or would I be
better off with 2.0 WRX heads?" GREAT QUESTION !!! From the info that's been
passing around I would GUESS that the 2.2 and/or 2.5 heads will work, but the
latest scoop is the 2.5's have much superior flow compared to the 2.2's.
Since the 2.0 WRX is as new as the 2.5, and purposefully built for
performance, I have to believe they would be comparable or better than the
2.5's and maybe give you a bit better compression. But that raises an
interesting question I have not heard addressed and would like to hear more.
Just for the sake of discussion and information exchange, does anybody out
there have any theories, experience, or feedback for the possibilities of a
2.0 WRX head swap for our US 2.2 Turbo Legacy vs the 2.5? Will it drop right
on like the 2.5 is supposed to? Any clearance problems? Inquiring minds
want to know. Larry Witherspoon, Torrance (Los Angeles), 92 Touring Wagon

2.0 WRX head swap for Aussie Liberty/US Legacy?

Post by Ross »

Larry, the compression ratio on my Liberty RS (2.0L) is apparently 8.0:1. I guess putting the 'bigger' heads might decrease that further, but if you were to put 2.0 heads on your 2.2 then theoretically I guess your comp ratio would increase. What is the standard comp ratio for a 2.2 turbo? I am not sure, but I think the comp ratio on a WRX is either 8.5 or 9:1. Anyway, hopefully somebody on the group can enlighten us further on all of these 'head' questions.

2.0 WRX head swap for Aussie Liberty/US Legacy?

Post by Dave C »

The EJ22T 2.2 US Turbo has a 8.0:1 compression ratio, so an EJ20 swap
would likely maintain the compression ratio.

A compression ratio bump to 8.5 would be nice, as it'd give a bit
more power off boost and everywhere else, though your chance for
detonation does increase.
