Coolant

Does anybody out there use the genuine Subaru Coolant? Is it necessary, or are there other, less expensive brands out there which have the required specifications? I recently had to replace one of the plastic end tanks of the radiator which had corroded at the lip where it meets the radiator hose and was surprised to see on my bill from the dealer that the coolant cost A$51.00.
Anyone?
Cheers

Any coolant will work fine. I'm using plain old coolant in mine....I even haven't flushed mine in a while, probably 5 years or so. If you want to get fancy you can put that cool stuff from havoline in there that doesn't have silicates or something like that. But it should be 51 bucks just for coolant....that's outrageous!!

Coolant

Ross,
you should change your coolant every 12 months regardless of how many mile/km's you have done.
Most coolants contain anti freeze properties, ie glycol's, which can actually turn corrosive over time if not changed.
There is a radiator reconditioning company near here that will NOT give 12 months warranty if you request anti freeze coolants to be used. Instead they use anti corrosive coolants that contain no glycol's. Naturally a lot of area's require anti freeze, to which he responded "in that case make sure it is changed every 12 months."
I myeslf change my anti freeze coolant every year. I use a good well known brand, Nulon, and no problems. My wifes Corrolla hadn't had the coolant changed for 4 years when we purchased it and the plastic heater valve was corroded away.
Hope this inf helps.
Regards, Rod.
