Subaru Legacy -90

Post by lns »

Hi all Subaru users,

I am new to this list and have a problem i hope to be resolved:
i have "air suspensions" (dont know if its called that in english) and first the right one begunn to leak a couple of years ago, that one was replaced with a new, it cost almost 900$ here in sweden, this was not a problem at the time but now the other side have sprong leak, the question is: is it an idea to buy a used? i cant afford a new one right now, what models have the same? is this a normal fault on the Legacy air suspencion? Will the rear also give in soon? Any sugestions?

Lots of questions but thats mainly becuse of the absense of a swedish dealer.

Thx
/Johnny

My recommendation, and the most common course of action on Legacies
with air suspensions, is to remove the air struts and replace them
with the standard gas struts from a salvaged Legacy.

These will never leak, and when they go bad, they just don't work
quite as well, instead of failing completely.

You should be able to find a set, but it might be a bit tricky in
your area. You'd possibly have to get some from the UK. The whole
replacement setup will probably cost less than two air struts and
last much longer.

>From what i understand, even though the air-suspension is really
comfortable, it's a pain in the @ss to work on, and it does tend to break
more often-then-not.

Instead of swapping your air-struts to more air-struts, you might want to
look into a regular strut or even high-performance while your at it. KYB,
Koni, STi, and Tein all make bolt in struts for our car. Good luck!

the air suspension units do give trouble once they start getting old. The rubber perishes and will begin to leak.
I was originaly told by a friend that has a wagon that you should hose off all road grime etc (weekly) from around the rubber air bag while the car is in it's high position. This way when in the lower position there are no small stones, dirt etc caught up and wearing away the rubber. Check the other struts by having a good look at the condition of the rubber air bag on the struts. You will easily see whether they are deteriated and on the way out.
regards, rod
