High idle, but different.

Post by hardcore1 »

1750 with the clutch out, 750 with the clutch in.

Done some vacuum sprat tests and idle went down when I sprayed the device directly below the pcv. I assume this is the air idle control. I do get 42 code also.

I take it you mean that the clutch engaged in neutral right?

Youre sure it isnt just cold... right?

No, I know the car pretty well. Been with subies for a long time and come from a very motor mechanical background.

If the pedal is not being touched, not pushed. Idles at 1700 regardless of the temp of the car.

When I push the clutch in the idle falls to 750. But only when it gets to the last 1 inch of throw to the floor.

Even if I am in gear driving down the road the car will not idle below 1500. Only when I push the clutch will the idle go down.

nothing personal, im not takin like that, just trying to make the situation clear. Even the depths of people I have asked about the issue I still havent got an answer yet. It is backword to the usual problem.

Please see my reply regarding the code 42 in the other thread

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... 711#232711

Regarding the clutch being depressed, it almost sounds like someone hooked the neutral sensor up to the clutch start interlock button on the clutch pedal.

Do you know if the car was messed with by a previous owner?

I have had the car since 2001 and it did not start doing this until a couple months ago. So, no wiring play withs. Although the car was parked through last winter and when I got it going again the varmints had eaten through my plug wires. Replaced the wires and all was well. I replaced the engine recently but this problem was pre swap.

OK, the engine i pulled had a dead hole #1, not sure what was the problem, assume bent valve because it would come alive at 3k rpm up until about the same time this idle issue came up. By the time I pulled the other motor, hole 1 was dead completely and very corroded in the exhaust port.

As far a a neutral sensor, where is that located? I will look to see if that is disconnected somehow. The only other electronics associated with the clutch seem to be the dissengage for the cruise and that makes no sense being it is at the top of the throw.

The neutral sensor is located in the transmission. It tells the ECU when the trans is in neutral or not....they don't play too much of a role on the MT vehicles, or at least when I tested it. However on the AT vehicles, the ECU will bump the idle up when the trans is put into gear vs. being in park or neutral.

That's what sounds like is happening when you put in the clutch.

The idle goes UP when the clutch is released (no foot pressure, not pushed in) regardless of neutral or in gear.

5 speed car.

I am sure at this time I will be replacing or adjusting TPS. In D-mode I get the 42 code when I let off the gas while driving. As soon as I push the gas it goes away.

Well I'd suggest adjusting the TPS/idle switch or replacing it, and then go from there and see how things run.
