4eat, wheels not moving, gears not engaging.

Post by juice91si »

okay, i had the center diff and pinion shaft replaced in my 4eat, and my brother and i re installed the transmission on my car.

we changed the tranny pan gasket, and i refilled the tranny with about 5 qts.

the tranny did lose more fluid after we drained it originally to take it off, so i was thinking it was low on fluid, but now the dipstick is over full on cold.

i can hear things moving around when i switch gears and the motor is off, but when its running and in any gear, the car doesnt move at all.

is it just low on fluid? i ran the car until op temp, but still nothing, wtf i need to get this thing going asap!

oh, and the tranny did work before the diff install, i drove the car home.

my repair manual says the capacity is either 8.8 quarts, ive put in at least 4.5. i didnt put more because i thought only 4.4 come out when you drain from the plug. although, when the pan was removed some was lost, also, transporting the tranny to the transmission shop, some was lost as well.

i was being cautious because i dont want to overfill the tranny, and the cold fluid level was high. ill add some more tho i guess and run it some more to see if anything happens.

but, can being short a couple quarts really cause this problem?

i just ran the car for a while, and while to motor is warm, the tranny fluid is cold, and nothing changed.

rpms are free to climb in all gears, and the wheels dont move

uh, you will need to pull the engine or the tranny apart again, and attach the torque converter to the tranny-correctly. they didnt do it right

oops, forgot to update this thread. my brother and i pulled the tranny friday night, and seated and reinstalled saturday night. tested it without axles and the stubs are moving, as well as the rear output shaft (?)

anyway, i finished off little things yesterday and put it back on the ground today. im gonna test drive it in a bit, but so far it seems as the tc was not seated properly, but it is now.

Just to clarify, are you checking the fluid with the engine running, and have slowly cycled the gear selector from park to 1, and back to park?

yup. no fluid level change at all, even after the engine is warm. and yes, i cycled the selector very slowly, a few times.
