2.2L engine rear main oil seal install depth question

Post by OrangeSuby »

Can anyone tell me how deep the engine rear main oil seal should be seated? I installed one 2 days ago and if it is seated all the way in, it leaks oil very fast! I'm guessing it should be recessed 0 to 1/4 inch into the block, but I'd like to know before I install the tranny again! I guess the factory special tool installer sets the depth, but I only have standard seal installer. Any help is appreciated!!

there's a notch at the bottom towards the crank which allows oil to drain from the bearing down to the oil pan, if you installed it all the way into the crank then you've covered this drain hole and that would explain the leaking.

I did mine a little more than flush with the case (just a little further in)

The seal needs to be more or less flush. Take a look at the pics of the oil seal at the top of the page

Thanks for the comments on the legacy. It started life as a FWD AT L.

These two pics show how far it's come
