Hate to break it to you, but I doubt any magazine is going to report on cars that are 14-20 years old. I'm in the market for a Legacy and am trying to decide which setup would yield the mileage I hope to get. Plus, it's an interesting comparison between the various setups in regards to AT/MT, AWD/2WD, and then how much variation there is between drivers.

if you're looking for a legacy to achieve the perfect gas mileage, you're going to fail.


AWD has significant drivetrain losses, even moreso with an automatic transmission; and turbo charged cars can get poor mileage depending on your style.

Perhaps you go buy a diesel something-or-other made in the 80's or 90's; those had great mileage usually, or a new hybrid car if you want good mileage.

Not saying the legacy can't get good mileage, it's just a poor platform for one.

First off, you guys are very quick to judge. Shows a lot for your character. Secondly, do ANY of you EVER remember being new to these boards? Think about that for a second. Give the guy a fucking break.

Lastly, scuzzy, where did this guy ever post that he was looking for a car with perfect gas mileage? He simply asked for some simple gas mileage specs for different year legacy's.

Edit: I live in the California foothills, and my average day to day mileage is around 20mpg.

Thank you, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not new to forums or cars, just to Legacy's. I searched through a lot of threads but didn't find what I was looking for so didn't think it would hurt to open a new thread. There's not really a "general" category so I threw it in engines.

I realize the legacy isn't the optimal car for mileage by any means, but like you guys have found, I think it does what it does very well.... a jack of all trades. I had a 80's VW turbo diesel that got around 35 mpg but it was no good in the cold and was a dog at 68hp. Also, diesel is more costly than gas, which it had not been previously.

The variations you can have on the car (that I asked be listed) all play a significant role in the gas mileage. You can't really compare mileage between a legacy without taking into effect how it's set up. Obviously you'll have more weight and driveline loss with the automatic vs manual, and the same for the AWD vs FWD. Turbos can sometimes help mileage, but often the "fun factor" with a turbo leads to lower mileage. This is partly personal preference, but if gas was free most people would prefer the AWD with the turbo, and the auto/manual choice is up in the air. Since gas isn't free, I'm trying to decide which combo will yield me the mileage I'd like. Yeah, having the AWD and turbo would be sweet, but this will be my "mileage" car as I've already got a 4x4 but it sucks gas. I'm leaning towards FWD wagon, naturally aspirated, with a manual. By all logic this combo should give the best mileage. I just wanted some actual numbers to gauge where that would put a car. I don't know where else one would find this info so that's why I posted on this forum. Yes there are EPA estimate for each year and options, but everybody knows the EPA estimates real world numbers can be far off.

So, hopefully that's justification enough for those who seem to be up in arms that I haven't posted before. No, I don't even own a Legacy, but obviously I will in the near future. Thanks in advance for those who help out... and to the "less-than-friendly" posters... well, every forum has them.

Highway: 30mpg (sometimes just a little more)
Normal 50/50: 26mpg
No mods that would affect gas mileage all the time

i used to drive it in a fairly spirited manor, but the gas required for that is expensive so now i do things like trying to keep it under 3k rpms all day, im also trying to get at least another 50k miles before it needs a rebuild

when I was living at ~8000' I would get 31 mostly 2 lane highway commuting, 60-120mph .
now Im at 4900 and get about 26. its been snowing so Im probably under 20 right now.
'91 ej22e w/2.5 bottom end ~11:1, 4.11 5mt, 205/55/16s, pretty even mix of cruising around at 1500rpm and pinnin it.

your driving will be the single biggest factor in your MPG. how far do you commute to work? is it highway? side streets? main streets? does the car get up to temperature before you arrive at your destination? do you spend alot of time between start and stops?

I am 99% sure we did a fuel MPG comparison about 6 months ago, so the post is there. I too, was a bit taken aback by the post, and being one of the first of this user's posts, it would have been much better to also post why you are asking for the info.

We are a smaller board, and this is a good thing and a bad thing.
good, because we do not have the issues of flaming like Nabisco, the negative is when new people come up and post like you did, they often do get flamed for not going to search first.

SO, welcome; but until you get to be known, you might want to be friendly and more informative on the WHY of your post.

i did an experiment because i have 1992 legacy AWD Turbo Automatic (with no mods yet) and i was getting about 300-320 km on 60L (which is a full tank) compared to my previous volkswagen that got 500-600 km on 40L i thought this was rediculous.

so with regular driving i do about 90% city i got about 13mpg

my experiment was to drive keeping the rpms below 2500 (which is when the turbo spins up) or even 2000RPM when possible. i havent finished this experiment but when i got to half a tank i had already driven 270km now i'm at a quarter of a tank and i've driven almost 400km thats about 20 mpg.

so in conclusion the way you drive can influence a subaru alot! it probably made such a big difference for me because of the turbo but in any case a subaru can be made alot more fuel efficient at the cost of fun driving you just have to ask yourself is it worth it?
