16G vs VF8?

16G vs VF8?

I think I read (in here somewhere) that the VF8 is between a TD04 & a TD05-16G in size.
I've never seen one in person so I can't say for sure.
I see JDM 90* inlet 16Gs frequently enough to know the exhaust housings tend to crack @ the v-band clamp (but they can be TIG'd) & up/dn pipe bolt down areas, and they are decently sized for a stock turbo.

My buddy Scott (Tleg93) is running a VF8 and I had a 16G on my '92. Visually, the VF8 looks almost as big as the 16G but the 16G is definitely bigger and pushes a lot more cfm.
I can't give you a fair comparison on performance because supporting mods were different and also his car is a 4eat where as mine was a 5mt and I ran more boost. It seems like a nice snail though.

Yeah, a 16g is a bit bigger than a vf8, but both will net you damn good power.
SemperGuard, I'd consider the vf10 smaller than the td04, or at least less capable because of their age. Maybe you know something I dont?

I'd say the 16G is 10% more flow than the VF8.
I have a VF12, which In think flows the same as a VF8 (but has better spool?). And through trying to research the VF12 I found statements that the 16G is about 10% over the VF12.
I saw the wheel sizes for a 16G on the link Adam just posted. I have the wheel sizes for the VF12 in the garage somewhere on a piece of paper. I'll find it and report back maybe tonight. I know it is not "all" of what makes a turbo, but it's a good start.
The VF8 has a 20-R exhaust housing right? The VF12 does.... Not sure if it means the same thing as the P-20 exhaust housing that the VF22/23 run (I think it's both of those)
BUT - if you are looking to upgrade the VF8 you have now, I'd speculate that you would want ot go either Big 16G or larger to get much cost benefit - but I've been wrong before.

I don't have the size of the compressor exducer, but everything else is larger on the VF10, so I think for the sake of size the VF10 is bigger than the TD04. 20R and P20 are the same measurements as far as IHI is concerned, but they are definately not the same housings. R housings are for RHB's, and P housings are for RHF's Newer design.
Just to add more fuel to the fire VF39 turbine is 52.5mm/47.5mm in/ex. So a slightly larger exducer, and slightly smaller inducer than a VF8/12. Compressor is 46.50mm/60mm in/ex. VF8 compressor is 46mm/60mm in/ex. VF12 compressor is 47mm/60mm in/ex. Of course you're comparing RHB to RHF, so extrapolate what you will.farfrumwork wrote:From the link Adam posted:

Oh and a TD05-16G small is 46.5mm/60mm in/ex on the compressor.

I was wrong about the VF12 compressor. In/ex is 45mm/56mm as per these pics stolen from mx_masta at mx6.com:

OH and vf40 (05-06 LGT) is 52.5/40 turbine in/ex 43.5/56.5 compressor in/ex. Again, this is an RHF5 turbo.
