A/C, Heater, Defrost fan stopped working today

Post by greg donovan »

it has been making "non-normal" sounds for a while and it would stop working occasionally. however, in the past all i had to do was slide the temp lever back and forth from hot to cold a few times and it would start woking again.

not today.

i am pretty sure it isnt the fan relay because then it would at least work on "4" but it wont even do that.

is my motor shot or is there another fuse or something that could be bad?

how can i check to see if the motor is shot aside from just buying a new one?

Is it the fan that stopped or everything? Like if you turn on AC does the compressor run?

First thing I'd check is the resistor pack under the glove box

just checked. nothing is happening. AC compressor does not turn on.

there is a very quiet sound under the dash that sounds like a servo trying to move a lever when i push the heater control buttons.

i am pretty sure it isnt the resistor pack. had one of those go bad in another car and the fan only worked on 4 when it went bad, because there are only 3 resistors in there for speeds 1-4 and 4 is full current w/no resistor.

plus the AC compressor would still engage if the resitor pack was bad wouldnt it?

You're deductions are correct. I wonder if the plug at the back of your controls came loose?

that would make me very happy if that were the case.

i asume that it is time to tear into the dash, inst it?

the more i think about that the more sense it makes.

that would explain why the compressor is not turning on.

just call me The Fonz.

i didnt have time to tear into the dash today but a well placed smack to the top of the dash where right above the heater controls kicked the fan back into action.

not sure if it caused the AC compressor to start as it was pretty dark and -4 out so i didnt feel lke looking. all i cared about was that it was warm in the car.

i will investigate more tomorrow.

Your problem probably has something to do with the solder points on the control board

As a side note almost the exact same thing happens to the first generation Acura Legend which makes the low oil pressure light come on randomly. I think its a "common" thing for cars of our vintage.

+1 for what Josh said. I had 6 joints that were bad. Touched them back up and it's working just fine now.

the age thing is really swaying me to perform a drivetrain swap into a 97+ impreza.

we i got inside a heated garage last night and did some more trouble shooting.

in this case it is defiantely the fan motor that is shot. banging on the dash was just enough to jiggle it back into action.

all i have to do now is reach under the dash and tap/wiglle the fan motor and it fires right up.

time to seek out a new/used fan.
