Well the short block bits are back in my possesion from the machine shop!! Block is bored! rings are gapped! All bearings are clearanced.
now about that last photo.... Has it ever happened to you? You know you have all these sweet parts and 8 free hours... you get every thing cleaned up, lubed up and.... half of the bolts for your block halves have apperntly walked out of the bag you were keeping them in? I guess they just got tired of waiting after 20 months. Time to order some new ones

Short block is together!!! and everything is that really good tight but really smooth/free spinning feeling this week i am going to finsh sticking on my oil pump and oilpan and oil cooler.
Has anyone really had a problem with the 22t oilpump not being sufficient enough? Would it be worth it to go up to the new 12mm oil Pump?

I also heard that the ej22t oil pumps had higher than normal capacitiy, due to the turbo / oil squirter / hyd lash adj application.
Not sure how true that is, but it sounds reasonable.
It looks just a bit closer now. I was waiting on the oil pan baffle from an STI. It is here so I installed it, the oil pickup and the oil pan finally.
I got an Intake manifold finally and I am nit picking it... It is a ej20H manifold (from a "twin" turbo legacy) but the throttle body has me in all sorts of a freak out as far as good and bad go.
The good: due to its shallow design, the 20h throttle body and intake manifold will give me about 1.5" more clearance for a top mount STI intercooler as compared the 22t manifold and TB setup I used before.
THe Bad: (i think) Well the throttle plate is only about 55mm in diameter as opposed to everything else being 60mm I think. and there isn't much room to be bored... maybe to 58mm. From some of the discussions I have had, this shouldn't effect me too much because of the use of the top mount IC and it should in theory keep intake velocity High for throttle response like I am looking for. Or alt least thats what people are saying to get me to shut up. Yes I have over thought every stupid little detail about this thing.
Oh and I finally found my Radiator. FOr you guys that need one check this out: www.jazzproparts.com. All aluminum Koyo Unit for the Legacy that only costs 216 Shipped. so thats what I am going with.
Still waitin on heads to come back. and for the guy to get back to me about the turbo... Anybody Know of a vf36/37 for sale?

Well my turbo and header are on the way. Pics early next week.
Front bumper painted and installed.
Sti Power steering pump installed.
More pics to come.
Though nico now has me freaking out since I used stock rods and was looking for 300WHP
Errrrr do I stop now and tear everything down now and go with new rods?

PacmanSTi ran a bone stock block with a T3/T4 rotated kit and surpassed that number w/o breaking anything. The EJ22T bottom end is forged, but it's not to say that things won't break from stress over time. legacy92ej22t (Matt) ran a 16g w/ upgraded piping & decent boost w/o busting up the bottom end. If anything, the tranny (stock or WRX) was his failing point.
It's your call, but so far there have been some decently built motors that haven't had issues with the bottom end coming apart.
I had the same thing that happened to NICO happen to a ej22e rod, but the hole it punched in the block was much bigger than NICO's.
It even shattered the coolant x-over pipe that sits on top of the block.
I still have the piston / rod-stub on my desk.
A Honda friend of mine destroyed a Pauter rod / Arias piston do to a bad injector, a lot of boost, & detonation. The rod bent & fused to the piston breaking the sleeve in the motor.
I know ej22t rods are supposed to take alot of abuse, but like Nico said they are old. That said there are a few stock longblock ej22ts that made good HP - Innovative Tunings ej22t/GT35r, the ej22t t3/t4 car above...
Aftermarket rods are not bullet-proof, but I'd like to know I did all I could before looking into my motor through the hole in the block...
Your build looks very nice, the coated pistons look amazing!
All this talk about rods is freaking me out. Really is, since I had a stock Baja today that blasted #1 rod right through the block and alternator (picks to follow later) Big nasty hole!!
i just hope mine will last for about a year. Then I will go with new rods, ej22e headgaskets, upgrade my compressor side of the hair dryer, and the Autronic. oh and tranny will have to be upgraded at that point.
At any rate, my birthday is thursday but my presents to myself arrived today!!

So any money I get for my B-day will be used to ship these out for porting and ceramic. From there I have to figure out a downpipe, Order a clutch, Acquire an sti intercooler. Oh and I swear the heads will be back soon.

Knock sensor is in!.... HAHAHAHA! what a lame update.
Anywho.... I wanted to update. I received pictures of the porting work that is going into my heads. THey look great, as they have not been opened up much at all but everything looks quite a bit smoother. The numbers the porter had for my stock heads said they looked good before porting, even compared to other identical sets on the same bench.
If I get his permission I will post pics.
I am coming down to the wire and there are a few things that still need taken care of. All of these I would greatly appreciate some experience/opinion/advice on.
Intercooler. Still trying to decide topmount or something like custom radiator/ intercooler just infront of it with short piping
Radiator. Like above topmount+Koyo, or custom
Downpipe. Need 3"catless that I can hack to my twinscroll bell mouth but unfortunately has to narrow to WRX-sized donut. Errr..
Crank Pulley. Read taht some of the engine builders are using stock one or newer aftermarket Harmonic Balancers and that the light weight Perrin unit I had before might actually be doing harm... any truth to this you engineers out there?
Also considering doing a hybrid thing with my turbo with a VF22 Compressor wheel and Housing.... Might be neat and I don't know if the vf36 (similar to the vf30/34) will be too small since the ECU I am running, 6K, I think that was tuned around a VF22. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Pics to come

Oh and I am also looking for help on picking/sourcing some new differentials.
Front Diff and center diff I want to replace since I have to crack the cases and reseal the tranny. I need to do some more digging on the front diff, but if I could find the STI 12kg center diff I think I would be very happy. The 20kg would be nice... but this is a street car/auto-x car. ..I would kinda like to know what it would be like on gravel and snow...

I use a lightweight crank pulley and intend to continue using one. Underdriven pulleys are crap in my opinion.
Consider that the flywheel or torque converter has significantly more mass directly connected to the crank. The only probable theory I have heard is that the mass of the front pulley helps to reduce the load on the front bearings during the power stroke, and I think that a quality oil changed often will make up for it.

I can get you a front diff. It would be a Modena unit out of Australia like MRT sells. $1400 including stub axles...

I've heard the crank pulley issue before too. However I'm not really sure whether it's an issue. I think depending on the power you're making, the more of an issue it is.
At 300 chp or above, you may want to consider using the stock pulley with the rubber damper in it. However I have nothing to back that up, and it's purely an opinion and hear-say.
Matt I will get a hold of you about that differential.
Thanks Josh. I was kinda thinking the same. I hope to be just over 300 at the crank, hopefully safe enough for my rods. WOuld really like to see 300 at the wheels though... That has me scared as all get out. I just wonder if the pulley would make any difference since its already been lightened up.
at the other end of the crankshaft.
Anyone know if the newer WRX or sti power steering lines will hook up with the old steering racks? Thats another issue.
