well i'd be willing to bet your flywheel isn't cracked but you might want to get it resurfaced if you see and deformities in it.

but yeah. buy from gripforce on ebay. they have great deals (as you can see in that link). $450 for a stage 1 clutch and flywheel? awesome.

i'm not sure on the weight of the stock flywheel.

but that clutch kit should work. i have a clutch kit for an 02-07 wrx on my 91SS and it works great.

Aaron - You're using a WRX clutch on a stock SS flywheel? My understanding was that you needed to use a WRX flywheel if you wanted to use a WRX clutch. I thought the WRX clutch was 240mm, but the SS clutch was 230mm, and the flywheels had appropriately differently-sized machined surfaces. Is that not true?

I believe that used to be the school of thought. You can run a WRX clutch on a SS flywheel. I've been doing it for about 5K miles now.

I was very unhappy with my purchase from gripforce. bought a stage 2 f1 for my impreza tranny, s'posed to be good for 250 horse. when I put my ar together I installed properly and then broke it in. I can never launch my car at all, slips, and if I am in second and go around a hairpin near my house and floor it, slip. if I am in a high gear and roll on the gas at like 3k, I hit 10psi boost and slip. I doubt I am making 250 chp now (maybe just) but I had same problems PRE FMIC and turning up the boost FCD etc. i adjusted my cable clutch so that its loose and engages close to the bottom of the pedal throw...

now I just have to make sure I am fully engaged before I get on it, and if I want to excellerate on the highway, no rollin on it at 3k, i have to down shift, rug, shift, rug....

I would like to hear some possitive stories tho, thats just my exp.

oh yeah, they werent very helpful, I described what was happening and automaticaly said I contaminated the clutch.. not the case BTW

I dont think theres anything wrong with the clutch, I just think its a stock pressure plate painted up and sold as a stage 2 upgrade. disc was exedy and I have no problem with that, it was simple clamping force (or lack thereof)

People might not want to hear this... but I went through 3 years of hades and well over 4 digits of dollars to learn this.

What you want is the stock Exedy clutch and pressure plate.

The flywheel you want besides stock is the Exedy billet steel lightened flywheel.

No need for stage 3,4,26, whatever. If you are seriously making that much power, then you need to go with an Exedy twin disc. You will save money over constantly replacing stage X clutches from wherever.

Seriously, if I went back in time and knew what was going to happen messing around with other stuff, I would have more money now if I just took the initial hit and put in a twin-disc even though I don't need one.

And don't forget they changed clutch styles with the changeover to the 2.5 in the WRX. They went from a pull type to a push type

Yeah, I'd actually agree with Brat4by4's advice. I recommend sticking with a stock-replacement clutch too. My reason is that a stock WRX clutch already can hold enough torque to break the stock SS transmission.

And I also think the Exedy flywheel is awesome. With the stock flywheel I was always frustrated by how long it took the revs to fall during shifts, whereas with the Exedy flywheel it's practically perfect.

Woah, the new WRXes use push-type again? Are they the same shape as non-turbo clutches?

Vikash-I was told not to use the WRX clutch with the stock SS flywheel but I went ahead with it anyways. I've been driving on it for the past ~5K miles with no problems. So far, so good!! Haha.

And IronMonkey is correct. You need a clutch kit from an 02-05 WRX. 06-Present will not work.

I am not totally sure. I only had my SS (technically 2.0 WRX) clutch/flywheel available to compare it to.

I know the flywheel is different than the '98-'01 RS, since the engagement face of the flywheel is recessed somewhat into the flywheel, and the pressure plate bolts on the non-recessed portion. IIRC, the RS was flat across the face of the flywheel.

Seriously. I would not touch ANYTHING but an Exedy flywheel or clutch. It's what STi uses for all their performance stuff. And their stuff has been proven again and again with hundreds of thousands of miles to be bullet proof.

That is a bad area for bad things to have happen, you are out of a lot of money or time/energy if something goes wrong.

Side note: follow clutch break-in period restrictions religiously. That short time determines how long the clutch will last the rest of its life.

I wouldn't buy a three puck, I bought a four puck sprung from ACT made for a 98-01 Impreza RS, flywheel and pressure plate (this is the push style made for the N/A transmissions - not the pull style of the turbo) for about $800.

Four puck clutches take some skill to drive, it's definitely different.

I'll tell you.....out of all the mods I've done, the light weight flywheel is about the only thing I probably wouldn't do again. It just makes driving the car around town more difficult and more herky-jerky
