I don't know which wheels you have, but the stock tires for the steel wheels (at least in the US) were 185 and 14 inch diameter. The 15 inch alloy wheels (on the turbos) came in 195 width. A 175 would be difficult to seat at best on a 15 inch and I don't think it would be very safe even if you could get it inflated.

Even though you said in your original post that they were 175/15.

We need the full size. There should be a number between 175 and 15, somewhere between 35 and 80, roughly. Without that number, we can't help you much.

load rating is how much weight that tire can carry, and speed rating is how fast you can go on the tire for an extended period of time.
yes you can go to a 185/14 tire

Read some of this website:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tiretech.jsp

Specifically this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... ?techid=46

this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... ?techid=33

and this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/ ... ?techid=35

Anyway, don't use a tire that has a lower speed or load rating than what's on the car.
