My 1990 N/A MT wagon (215,000 miles) has started to puff blue smoke. It only happens when I get it up over 4000rpm, and only for the first minute or so after sitting overnight. I'm thinking valve seals...
Performance is not affected.
Question is this: I just got a new job that pays much better and am going to get an STI in three months (after I pay off my new motorcycle ) Will I be okay driving the Leggy on occasional journeys until then? I don't commute with it, and drive it maybe 3 times per week around town.
When I get the STI, will the Legacy pass CA smog (it passed last time)? I'm guessing that valve seal blowby has a negligible effect on emissions once the car is nice and warm...
Well, If you keep brapping it out to 4000rpm right when you start it up, I'd be surprised if it lasted a week. Why the hell are you doing this? You start a car, sit in it for about thirty seconds, then drive slowly untill it has warmed to temp. Unburned oil has lots of hydrocarbons in it. I doubt it will pass.
I hope you get your new sti and treat it the same way, let me know when you blow your turbo, or a ringland.
It's an Ej22! As long as there is still oil in the pan, of course it will run for another 3 months. I can't believe this question is even being asked...

Not even. As long as there is gas in the tank and a working fuel pump and power source to the ECU and fuel pump and the starter when you start it. NOTHING can stop it then! XD

Yeah, even blowing oil all the time you'd be fine unless it was an exhaust valve, then you'd only have a hundred miles or so and you'd be using a quart of oil every day or so.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
mine has over 260k and I swear I could put a brick on the gas pedal to blow it up and it wouldn't blow. As long as you change the oil and keep a check it will make it for a long time which someone apparently hasnt been doing

I'm not.
The car was sluggish starting, which later turned out to be a battery that needed replacing. As I was trying to figure out what it was I gave it some gas and noticed a slight puff of smoke in the mirror. So I gave it more gas, and found the symptom I mentioned. I tried again this morning and got the same result. That's twice.
I came here for a little advice, not to be treated like a fool. I'm sure you meant well, but it didn't come across that way.
