Aussie WRX ECU Shootout

Post by William D. Robinson »

I keep stumbling upon a link where some magazine in Oz did a shootout of ECUs for the WRX, but the actual page is never available. If any of our marsupial friends know what I am talking about and can steer me toward that, I would be very grateful. I am particularly interested in comparing the Link ECU to the Dastek Unichip.

On the subject of Dastek Unichip, they have "dealers" all over the US, but Cobb Tuning in Texas is the only place that I know of that is gearing up for the new WRX with an AWD dyno. As near as I can tell, there is no practial alternative to a 4wd dyno for tuning 5-speed Subaru with a Unichip.

That is not even a valid comparison. The link computers are fully
programmable so you can tune it to your exact requirements when ever
you wish.

Looking at the graphs they obviously didn't know how to tune the
microtec or link.

I think there is a lot of bias in that review.

Sorry what I forgot to say, was the possum link just plugs into your
existing wiring on an EJ20 engine so less install cost are the result.

I know for a fact the link as it comes from Possum motor sport are
very detuned, and cause the cars to run very average. But when they
are tuned correctly the only ECU in my experience that can perform
better is the microtec.

I would seriously question the company that conducted the testing.
Looking at the graphs it appears that they didn't know how to tune
the Microtec or Link properly.

This was one thing the didn't mention on the survey. I wonder if you
can get rid of your airflow meter on the Unichip?

The main advantage of the Link or Microtech is you can do away with
your airflow meter, and increase the size of your piping to your
throttle body, all good.

Those curves look much better. Interested in the drop at about
150Km/h, do you know the reason for this?

The other question what is wrong with the rail setup for #2 cylinder?
wouldn't 4 also be affected?

How much are your unbreakable gear kits, for when I blow my twin
turbo box up?

BM you mean the slight dip?
if so then this was due to the (weird) and unique car, tune, any more ign.
and it would ping on PULP, no matter what we did, we could not be rid of
this small dip, although it can be seen it could not be felt in the car!

..>

BM the rail problem is same for all EJ20's due to the length of the flow
around the two heads, we don't tell anyone exactly what the cause is, or the
fix, (until we do it), but it is a common mod on all group A rally cars etc
and its pretty simple but time consuming to do.

well worth the safety though!

BM hahahah!
we do synchro and Dog sets, prices start around $5k..

Don't worry Mark I know what the fix is now. And I have diagrams on
how to mod it. But I won't tell anyone here if you don't want.
