Chains bad for the center diff?

Post by BSOD2600 »

Took a trip up to Stevens Pass area to do some snowshoeing today. I've got some crappy no-name tires with ~50% tread left, so my snow traction really sucks. They had signs for chains required so I begrudgingly threw mine on for the first time. Drove about 30 mi with them; never above 30 mph.

I've read that because of the different rotational sizes of the front/rear wheels, it'll damage the diff. Any idea how much damage I've done to my center diff now?

Hopefully not too much...

The best thing would be to get 2 sets of chains (like I have :D) so that all wheels are the same...

But you will probably be ok Chris :D

Yea, well thats also twice the cost. I really need to get myself bigger rims and better tires, but just don't have the cash for that right now.

Chains on packed snow is fine, nice and smooth driving. On thin ice/snow its rough. Lots of vibrating, etc. I can watch the hood moving around a lot, heh.

What are some of the signs that the center diff is going bad?
