Sambo, you wrote this to the BC-BF list;

"I have yet to have proven any of these theories, and that is exactly what
they are at the moment. I haven't had the opportunity to really hash this
stuff out with a Subaru turbo genius to see if I'm at all correct. If you
are, or know someone who is, have them get in contact with me. I'd like to
talk to someone who has "been there" with front mount intercoolers,
pre-coolers, etc."

Have you heard the name Byron Leggett. I introduced him to an Imprezza list
about a year or so ago and his name has become almost legend among them. He
has transplanted a 2.2 Legacy Turbo engine into an Imprezza with mods up the
ass. He blows a very large turbo thru a front mounted intercooler and has
one of the most powerful Subarus on the planet...double the power of a lowly
WRX. It is a street driven race car. His biz is here in the Southern
California area specializing in custom fab and engine work for Subes. It's
called B-Spec USA. Please be advised B-Spec USA should be considered at the
"high end" of the Subaru service spectrum, with emphasis on HEAVY
MODIFICATIONS, and the prices that go along with that type of activity.

Check out the website, give them a call, tell him I sent you, and let me know
your impressions please.

Hi Larry, We built that white Imprezza of Byrons here in Denver in a
garage and Byron bought it from a friend of mine. It was doing a 13.8
in the 1/4 mile at this altitude and has been improved on in Ca. I
think it is running 26lbs of boost last I heard. This friend has
another Imprezza under construction and on this one they thinking
800hp. The car is completly striped inside and should be pretty
impressive I will try and get some info on front mounts today and get
back to all of you.

800 bhp will be impossible, 400bhp is more realistic, and that is with major
internal mods.

Good luck though

Heh, whatever.

An EJ22T with new internals could take well over 600 i'm sure, 400
with stock internals and great engine management. Remember, it's
closed-deck. They RA is the only other block that's even close to as
strong, and it's got all the spiffy upgrades.

Byron's is surely over 500. Nice car, saw it and talked to him at
SEMA '00.

The EJ25, with die-cast, open deck is getting in the mid 300s in
Shiv's Project Impreza. He's trying to break it but it just keeps
going and going.

Nothing is impossible.

Last I heard Byrons was reportedly over 600 bhp and there is an
Iprezza in au that is supposed to have 450 at the wheels. In 1983
Renault built a turbocharged 1.5lt that had 800hp, as you said
anything is possible. This gets in to cubic$$$$ quickly. Doesn't look
like they have reached the limit yet but when the limit is found it
can rather spectacular. I was at Brainard years ago when a friend got
in trouble in the nasty turn 10, he missed the shift overreved the big
chevy a bit and the whole front corner of the engine came off.

I talked to Byron at Rim of the World, and he's claiming over 500lb ft/lbs
of torque; do the math and you'll find the HP....

Well I know of a 800Hp Impreza, mid 10 second quarter mile. You will
not achieve this though without far too much money to blow.

500 reliable HP will set you back about at least $30k. That is if you
a lot of the work yourself.

You would even come close with just that you would need to replace
the heads with DOHC heads at minimum, even to get 450Hp at all four
wheels.

Yep, have seen that Auz car, gold and 443BHP at all four wheels 11.4
second quarter mile, on road tyres and in complete road trim. and
only running at 20PSI, they can crank it up to 27PSI. There is
another in Auz that is running 35PSI, not sure of the HP figures.

Possum Bourne, NZ rally driver recently competed in an event in
Questown, NZ. Wouldn't tell me how much over 500Hp he was running,
just that it was running over 500Hp at all 4 wheels. Needless to say
he took the title this year. Rod Millen came second in a V8 Toyota
truck.

They may get to 800 but like you say it is going to get very
very expensive, the rear diff will have to be something aftermarket
and the gearbox may be the weak link. The gearbox has to be short and
the gears have to be small to fit inside and right off I don't know
what they will have to use. But it is about time someone showed the
Hondas and others "The beauty of AWD".There was one car on the net
from Auz and they showed a video from the passengers seat and it was
doing a 10.4 I believe.

You wouldn't believe what they do to the gearbox. It's un-believable!

Firstly, they reduce the size of the housing by milling it down from the
inside to make room for the gears. Then after it's milled they polish the
entire inside. Next they reduce the size of the reverse gear to make room
for first, and the other gears - totally amazing stuff. 10.4 is about right.
Totally out of this world. I know they haven't done all that is do-able too.
The new 6 gear tranny, who knows what can be done with that monster. The top
rally cars are all "drive by wire" now. Freaky stuff.

Oh I believe it like I say anything is possible if you approach it
with cost is no object. I had an association with Porsche years ago
had a chance to check out a few cars and owned a type 550 Spyder. They
had over $100,000 911s and the 917 was about three times that. The 917
had a turbo motor that was incredible 5.0lt with peak readings on the
dyno of 1500hp and pretty reliable. How about a 904 powered drag bike
that would do over 300mph in 5 sec? Technology has come a long way
since then.

Subaru turbo guru for Sambo

Post by Sam & Beth Barrett »

Well, because I didn't read it all at one site. This is stuff I've picked up
from speaking with folks on the subject for the last couple months, and/or
internet medium.

However, there is one site with some info regarding the better part of what
I've described below regarding the tranny. The drive by wire stuff I've
learned only from speaking with folks whom actually travel to go see a rally
outside their own state, or country for that matter. Most are rally racers
themselves. I am a mere enthusiast at best.

Tranny info here:

http://www.b-specusa.com/gearbox.htm

I can't wait to see what they can do to the 6 speed, when/if Byron gets his
hands on one.

I have to give the correct recognition to Larry W. He enlightened me to
Byron's project, as did others (Jason G., DLC, et. al.) in reply to my post.

Why don't you just give us the URL and we can read it ourselves.

Cool thank you, I was reading that information from the site the
other day, so it was a bit frustrating hearing it all again.

Sorry

Heh, whatever.

An EJ22T with new internals could take well over 600 i'm sure, 400
with stock internals and great engine management. Remember, it's
closed-deck. They RA is the only other block that's even close to as
strong, and it's got all the spiffy upgrades.

Byron's is surely over 500. Nice car, saw it and talked to him at
SEMA '00.

The EJ25, with die-cast, open deck is getting in the mid 300s in
Shiv's Project Impreza. He's trying to break it but it just keeps
going and going.

Nothing is impossible.
