Coolant tank fix.

Post by 93SubyT »

Well like always I go to look around in my engine bay and something breaks or comes loose (I guess I should stop poking around) and to my great pleasure a second coolant line breaks. So after getting very pissed off (Lucky i was at Canadian tire) I went in and got some stuff to do a temporary fix(worked but still dripped slowly). I drove it to my mechanics place and he starts taking all the lines off of the tank and snap snap snap, weeeeeeeeeee no more nipples. He proceeded to grind the nipples down flat then brought out his taps. He then showed me that the tank my look to be plastic but it is indeed aluminum underneath. So he taped it and but some brass fittings in with some steel epoxy to seal the threads and bingo no leaks and the nipples wont break anymore. Took him 30min to do it all and it was about 1 hour before I was driving again.

Hope this helps somebody out.

I did the same to my coolant tank. Removed it, grinded the face of all the nipples flat, and installed brass air brake fittings. Worked like a charm... until the tank itself cracked.

I doubt the tank is alluminum. My tank cracked down the backside and leaked everywhere.

ThreeEyedBandit - Its just stupid that they reinforced around the nipple and not the nipple itself. But ya its great that simple things work so well.

TheSubaruJunkie - The back of the tank around the nipples is aluminum for sure cuz he drilled through metal. The rest of the tank if it cracked on you then its not and thanks for that info.
