Who here tunes their own SS?

Post by IronMonkeyL255 »

Anyone?

I am getting geared up to get my Autronic installed, and was hoping to do most of my own tuning. Anyone here tune their own and have some insight? What kind of AFRs are you targeting?

I already have a wideband O2 sensor, but still need to get an EGT gauge and a knocklink to keep tabs on everything.

I try to keep my SS down around 11.5:1 to 12:1 on boost...I know 12.5 is safe...but I really don't wanna blow the sucker up!

I have tuned my wagon alot..... And even though I blew pistons like a kindergarten teacher wipes noses, I am confident in my abilities, its just that HP greed wins out.

So..... Dont get greedy with boost and do ALOT of passenger seat tuning so you can watch and learn with the AFR guage.

Sounds good.

What kind of timing do y'all run? Any initial setup suggestions/pitfalls? I've been screwing around with the software alot trying to learn the ins and outs, but you can only do so much without the unit in and functioning......

Interesting thing I heard someone mention is the difference in tuning philosophies between the US and Japan. In the US, the tendency is to use more boost and less timing, while in Japan, they go for less boost and more timing.

More timing/less boost should produce better respose and more torque, I would think. Whereas more boost would make for a higher peak number on a dyno.

That sounds far more preferable to me.

Fantastic book. Read it, then read it again.

At redline I run about 23psi out of my GT3071R and I keep it about 10.9:1. Its a hair on the conservative side and leaves some on the table, but I know I'm safe.

Timing wise under high load, I'm at 20-21 degrees, but I can't really optimise it untill I get on a dyno. There really is no way to really optimise your timing unless you are on a dyno. A nice G-tech can help you get in the ballpark though.

An EGT sensor will help you stay away from danger, like melting your pistons. I have a couple freinds who like the TurboXS knock light, but a KnockLink works just the same.

Just remember, make small changes. When you make large-scale changes is when things go horribly bad...
