Porting or different heads?

I have been planning some major engine work in the not to distant future, and originally I was planning on using some wrx (ej205) heads and doing a wiring harness merge.

But, would a different option be the stock ej22t heads, but with a valve job, port and polish, different cams. Which would have the best potential flow, and the best potential horsepower.

Obviously price is a slight concern, but not the primary factor to base the decision on.

So what does everyone think about this? Which heads would be better? :-D

You see people talk a lot of shit about our Ej22T heads on the big boards, but the fact of the matter is that with a set of Delta cams and a P&P job they'll flow just as well as a set of stock Ej205 heads.

No matter what you do, I would avoid the Ej205 heads. There's no reason to do any wiring on your car. Ej20G heads are a direct bolt up and not only do they flow better but they don't have sensor compatibility issues like the Ej205 heads. Or the DOHC Ej25 heads are another option. They are pretty easy to convert to turbo use as they were cast with the proper outlets on them and just need to be drilled out and tapped. BOTH of these heads outflow Ej205 heads by 15-20% or so...

I am also assuming that the ej20g heads are DOHC. So its as simple as removing the 22t heads and bolting the 20g head up and connecting sensors up? Are cam sensors and everything else compatible? And any differences between the sti and wrx version of the heads (or any particular ones you recommend)?

And do you happen to have any links to relevant threads?

I already was searching and getting some good information, I was just wondering if there were any particularly good reference threads, because some of the best threads that I have found weren't by using the search...So a legit suggestion would have been nice instead of jumping on the "lets bash this guy because he doesn't use the search" bandwagon

Jesus Christ people. When did this place become such a bunch of nazi search assholes. If you aren't going to help the guy out just stay out of his thread. Many of us came to this site because it was nicer and more friendlyt than the big boards. If we become like them, are we really an any better place to hang out?

I think you should give the SOHC EJ25 heads a chance. They flow well, and are supported by a few cam companies. Plus, the bolt right up w/o having to worry about any cam gear shinanigins.

Getting a better flowing head to begin with might be cheaper than porting your current heads, unless you choose to DIY port your heads.

The coolant galleries on Phase II EJ25 heads do not match the galleries on the closed-deck EJ block. Not saying that they are impossible to use, but definately not with the same "plug-and-play" ease of the other EJ heads.

And beyond that, they are too big to clear the uppipe without getting either a custom uppipe made, or Dog forbid, as some people have done, actually cutting a big massive chunk out of the corner of the head!!!

Furthermore, the DOHC Ej20G and Ej25 heads outflow the SOHC Ej25 heads up top, where on a boosted application it's really going to matter the most...

ps. They make cams for all of these heads. They are ALL readily supported. SOHC Ej25 heads have nothing on any of the others in this department...

anyways, I am in the process of doing a ej20g head swap, you will need the intake manifold to do this as well, and the injectors are reccommended as the stockers are pretty much for no more than 14=16 psi safely.
I picked up my setup for under 200 dollars, but throw in cams and timing belt im looking at about 750 the the entire setup.

Thanks for the replies guys, ive been looking into the 20g hybrid, and its seems the most reasonable option for the following reasons.

- Designed for turbo application
- High flowing
- No wiring (mostly plug and play)

I have been trying to secure a deal for a set of built 20g heads from axis racing for about 700. Fully upgraded valve train and what not (stock cams unfortunately, but Ill probably send them of to delta for regridnds).

Any inputs, comments, etc, let me know.

I would be getting the heads used (pre-owned, but never used)

EJ20G heads/cams
valvetrain built by Ron @ Axis about 3 years ago
The kit has a single spring design and is recommended for an 8000-8500 redline.

Heads were assembled on a motor, but never ran. Heads have standard valves and are NOT ported/polished.

Axis Racing Stage 1 Valvetrain Kit:
- Single Spring Valvesprings
- Titanium Retainers
- New Buckets
- New Shims (Shim Under Bucket Design)
- New Keepers
COST: $1,199.99 from Axis

I didn't realize that Ron had changed the name of his business. I suspect it had to do soemthing with his falling out with Mike. Anyways, Ron is a very very reputible builder. He was one of the first guys commercially offering a built Ej22t bottom end as well an Ej22t 2.4l stroker builds. He does very nice work and that's a great price for a set of heads he's built...
