2.2 legacy turbo boost

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

2.2 legacy turbo boost

Post by boarderbw »

I have a 1991 subaru legacy turbo (ej22t) and im getting a boost guage and boost controller for it. What is a safe psi range for it? Everything else on the car is stock.

10 psi is the maximum that you should run without an intercooler. Stock boost is 9 psi, so it's obviously not that much more.

If you put in a 3" turbo back exhaust you'll notice some power gains, but wait until you install an intercooler and then you can turn up the boost.

If you get an intercooler, I think without gettin a FCD(Fuel cut defender) the max is 15, depending on what elevation you are at. After you get some sort of FCD, you can run up to as many as you can get that little turbo to put out.
Kickin' it old-school.

The fuel cut on our cars is at 12.75 psi or more.

A fuel cut defender is easy to make, just search for a thread on how to do it. The VF11 (stock turbo) is very efficient at more than 12-13 psi though...

Honestly, I would not suggest raising the boost until you have more/better mods to support an increase in boost. The VF-11 can do more than the 11-12 before fuel cut, but without an intercooler and a better exhaust, you are not going to see much in the way of gains.

I would suggest locating a 06-on wrx intercooler, and then maybe buying a used good 2.5-3 inch exhaust on Nasioc and modifying it to fit.

I received more power from the exhaust modifications than i really did upping the boost 4 lbs.

We really should do a sticky on suggested order of modifications.

ok thanks. ive heard alot about the coffee cup mod and desnorking but i dont quite understand them. Does the coffee cup mod give me horses or does it just sound cool? and is desnorking just removing the intake silencer under the fender?

2. Boost Guage (So you know whats happening and when)
3. Coffee Cup Mod
4. De-snork (Prolly same day as Coffeecup mod)
5. Intercooler
6. Manual Boost Controller (AFTER supporting Mods so you dont fubar something)
7. Fuel-Cut Defender
8. Hood Scoop from 2.5rs or whatever the hell you want.
9. Bigger Turbo
10. Engine Managment
11. Bigger Injectors & Probably a Walbro Fuel Pump
12. Um... I dunno... DOHC and Forged Internals????
13. Transmission... You may want to do something... Or wait for a disaster and use it as a good excuse for a newer better one!

But what about suspension and brakes and tires and wheels?? Or are we just talking power?

Because power is nothing without control ;) (And I speak from experience! )

Spencer is right.

Just about anyone on this forum or any other car forum will tell you that you need to be able to stop and turn better, before you go for speed.

But I know what it's like to want power. Hahaha. So do a few mods, but I'd at least recommend upgrading your brakes...

Right now I'm running a 3" Turbo-back catless with a bad boost controller (crazy psi and Fuel-cut) on stock suspension and shot brakes.

(It will all be fixed this weekend. 8)

Hahaha I have a 3 in" TBE with stock suspension and brakes. It really doesn't give you that much power so I'm not worried.

I'm just saying, that before you go throwing on a big turbo with massive fuel injectors and a jet engine, do some other mods first.

FWIW, the intake silencer (what gets deleted in the coffee cup mod) is one of the lowest sources of restriction in your intake tract. The snorkus has considerably more pressure drop across it. I believe it was COBB or one of the other notable/reputable subie vendors who did tests on all of this. They have their results posted. When I get home I will see if I can link it.

So while the coffee mug mod sounds cool, it doesn't really give you much.

Just FWIW.

Not sure... i seem to get a boost spike that is like a shot of nitrous, then I hit fuel cut...

I can feel that its only a spike... Because all is well, then HOLY SHIIIITTTTT!!! BAM... Fuel Cut.

I'm good through about 4k RPM, then it spikes and hits at about 4700

Kinda odd. This weekend hopefully I can IC it and swap a controller from my wrecked car.
