Wow... That was interesting... Honda S2000

So... On my way to school... I was in the middle lane mindin my own business, goin about 65-70... And as I'm commin around this corner that goes down a hill I let off the gas because there are always cops there and i didnt want a ticket.

Well, an S2000 pulls right up on my ass and starts flashin his lights... Asshat.

Anyways he got pissed then punched it around me, well, ya, know, there werent any cops so... I downshifted and nuked it.

I PULLED AWAY?!?!? He was on it to... And we were climbin a hill.

I was like WTF? Those weigh 300lbs less and have like 60 more hp...

So I'm at school and I looked up the specs of those things as I'm thinkin wtf?

They only make power WAY up high... I mean peak hp is 237hp @ 7800 rpm... Holy Crap!

AND they only have 153 lbft @ 7500 rpm...

Geez, I suppose he didnt stand a chance up hill, anywhere else he would have had me...

Just an awkward experience... thought I would share...

And yeah, those S2000's are sweet. I wouldnt mind having one. Ive seen some very fast ones here.

Yea... I know... It was on a really long straight away with very very few cars... not to mention a 4 lane freeway. (4lanes each way)

I'm told that unless you are at WOT and at 7000 rpm they perform like a Civic.

Weight is close to 3000 lbs.

If I can't smuggle BMW's new 2.0 diesel through Canada for my car project I'll use an S2k drivetrain. The power band would be well suited to a 1400lbs vehicle, but the mileage wouldn't be where I want.

I finally got a chance to drive an S2K a couple weeks ago.

I personally love the car. No, it won't rip your head off, but the handling is scary.

I can't imagine what the new CR handles like.

Plus, that sound at 9k rpm is just too beautiful. And the car was stock.

speekin of newer cars. me and spencer where talkin about my uncles srt-4. i thought it would kick my cars ass but i dunno. i road in the car way before i ever bought my turbo legacy and man. those things have Awesome handling for a front wheel drive car. we where in the woods going to tillamuck ( how ever you spell that town) and were in the passing lane going around a 45mph corner at 70+! out side lane passing a bmw m3! i got really scared because i was like, "THIS IS A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR! WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THE GAS IN A CORNER!!!??? thinking that in my head at the time.

s2k's are very nice but.... not for me.

Especially in a brand new Lexus IS250 AWD... Talk about handling... AND WITH PADDLE SHIFTERS!!

In August we drove the Alfa in the Monte Shelton Rally for older sportscars.

It ran from Portland through the back roads to Tillamook for lunch.

Then a loop into the hills, ending up at the Otter Crest Inn-right on a cliff above the ocean.

Next day the route went inland for lunch at Corvallis and back to the Inn.

Some of the best "twisties" I've driven--not on track. Hardly any traffic and NO cops.

Made it a 6-day trip that amounted to about 800 miles --no probs, and only one hour of driving with the roof up..

I "raced" an S2000 at a lapping day. Could hang with it and keep it away in the twistes and through an autocross-like section that had been set up to break up the oval (Bremerton raceway's an old airfield) but that f-er could really catch up on the the very long straight section. I think it was the first time I really understood what VTECH FTW meant! <grin> I mean I checked my rearview once and he was way, way back and then all of sudden he was next to me. About shit a brick...

Looking over the car (yellow ugh!) I saw lots of room in the engine bay for a turbo too. They look real nice with a hard top...

But there are Sooo many other cars I'd rather have.

I doubt he downshifted it far enough to get into powerband...as stated above...those engines have a very narrow powerband.

If it wasn't for the convertible aspect, I would be ALL over owning an S2000 like stink on a skunk...

I may still have to get one honestly, and get the hardtop for it, and NEVER take it off!

(it rains a lot in Oregon)

Thats what I figured... But the ol subie had more than he anticipated! And I happened to downshift into the perfect spot on the power band for a hill climb.

And the subie sounds far better than any street honda IMO...

'cept I've never heard an NSX... So subtract that from the equation... How do they sound?

They sound really good. Especially if you get a few K for a nice titanium exhaust. Which I will probably never be able to afford. There's something about having the engine right behind you that sounds so right.

In September, nine old Alfas (oldest,1961) took a tour up to the wine country.

The "sweep" car was a S 2000, of a couple of years old. At a rest-break at Manning Park Lois and I were late getting going, but the S2000 waited for us. We were behind a convoy of about 10 motorhomes, with the rest of the guys ahead.

When we finally got past the road was clear and it inspired some rapid motoring. On the first pass at higher speeds, I thought the Honda would be right on my ass--but he wasn't.

Then on the long declines down to a short bridge and then up the other side --same thing. Two-lane road with rough surface and humpy-bumpies, which ideal for the compliant suspension of the Alfa. The car was designed to win its class in the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio--and did.

We caught up to out group just before a gas-stop in the next town, and the Honda guy came over and asked if it had a "six" under the hood. I said something about just a strong 2 L, he said " Incredible handling, and one sweet ride."

Made my month, and later got to thinking about it.

Alfa weighs 2000 lbs and is putting out 140 torque over a broad -lower rpm band.

Honda weighs 3000 and is putting out 162 torque in a narrow band, which the driver was not using.

Then there is the problem of a stiff suspension on rough roads.

Well, heres a subie one...

I was on Fort Vancouver Way (the road Clark College is on for any locals) and its a fairly long, two lane rd. Well the speedlimits 25, BUT everybody does 40 on it.

I was sitting at the stoplight and a CRX pulls up (it was also reeeallly wet) and it had been rattlecanned lime green... YUK...

And it had an FMIC... But it wasnt hooked up (litterally LOL)

So... I glance at him, more than anything just looking at the glory that is rice, and he starts to rev his engine (can you say fart can?)...

Well, I bit... Light turned green, I launched, he spun... and spun, and spun, and caught!

But I had already taken off so he had not a chance of catching me...

Ahh, the beauty thats AWD! Just dont count on it to stop you.

Driving these two cars is just plain pleasure.

However, the Alfa suspension is just so compliant and comfortable, but very well sorted out that I'm going to put softer springs on the Twgn.

I got the DMS 40s because they provide full travel and adjustible ride height. The rally setup has spring rates of 225 front and 180 back, which has been good with a full load of kayeks and mountain bikes as well as camping stuff. Also, I was going to get in some track time.

But, I've quit whitewater paddling and will be doing events in the Alfa.

DMS has 200 and 160 springs and these have been ordered so it will be more comfortable--got the 20mm sway bars on--so the handling for most conditions will be good.
