ABS dashlight

Post by Hustler M »

I own a 91 SS and recently my ABS dashlight came on. I am horrible at troubleshooting, so just wondering where I should begin. I did a forum search on this topic and found nothing. If its acommon problem maybe the mods could sticky a thread with the info.

You're welcome too. I don't have the time to go through all the posts over there. I usually try to go through every post here.

If I would have saw you needed it over there, I would have definitely posted it :)

My ABS light came on today after waiting at a stop sign for a few minutes, in lots of snow. Once I arrived at my destination, turned the car on and off again, the light went away. The is the first time it's happened since I've had the car. 94TW w/5MT. Being that there is a lot of snow, I'd prefer to have my ABS fully functional...

In the FSM that was posted, how do I enter diagnostic mode for the ABS? Is the abs control unit in plain sight, along with the LEDs?

My car does that sometimes. If I pulse the brakes though. Turning off the car and turning it back on for the light to go out is normal. I wouldn't worry about it. Even alot of snow getting in the hub can cause the abs to give a wheel sensor code.

I guess its the 'typical' ABS fluke thing lots of you have experienced. Drove home, romping on the brakes a lot in the snow to trigger the ABS. No light came on. Go figure. Well at least next time it happens, I know NOT to turn the car off to get the trouble code(s)...

ARG! So the ABS light came back on several times on the drive home (each time I turned the car off and on again to clear it). I checked under the passenger seat and found the ABS module.

Image

Mine is 26720AA210. Looking parts catalog Legacy777 put together, I don't see this module listed at all. What year is it for? The ABS hydraulic assembly in the engine bay is 26731AA200 - nippon.

Also, for the life of me, I cannot even see a LED at all. What side / exact placement on the ABS module is it suppose to be located?

It's snowed a ton here and I want my ABS!

I talked with a tech at Smart Service (local subaru shop) and they said my car might be the type with out an LED. Instead, I have to use some diagnostic connector under the dash to flash the ABS light instead.

More searching on here revealed, this thread. Most of the links in there don't work anymore. Anyone have copies?

Anyways the OP found a 2 pinned wire connector by the fuses. I looked and found one on mine too (I'd assume its the one with red and green wire).

I tried putting a small paperclip into one of the jacks and touching it to the body, while turning on the ignition. Nothing. Tried the other hole. Nothing. Tried turning the car on. Nothing.

After reading this EndWrench subaru ABS article, I'm fairly sure I've got the ABS-SE system (my hydraulic assembly in the engine bay looks exactly like the one in the guide). Anyways the article goes on about clearing codes and has: Tip: At the moment the ECU clears its memory, you can hear the relays in the HCU cycle once.. I do recall hearing a CLICK when I disconnected the jumper wire from that 2-pinned connector. If thats the case, why didn't I see code(s) flash?

How the hell do I find out why my ABS is malfunctioning?

There is a LED on that ABS unit. Mine has it. I had to make a small cut to see the abs unit better.

You have the exact same ABS unit as me? The ABS-2E system?

You know what actually, my abs under the hood looks different from alot of the abs units I have seen on US cars. So maybe the abs computer is different as well? I will have to check tomorrow to dark and cold. Tomorrow will be very bright and cold with 30cm of the white stuff ;)

Looked under the carpet I have the exact same unit. I thought it had a LED looked closely guess it didn't. On your USMB post porcupine posted the diagnosis.

I got it! It WAS that abs check connector in the kick panel. Forget if I had originally only turned the ignition to ACC instead of ON.

Anyways the three codes it threw were: 24 - Left Front Sensor (Short), 26 - Right Rear Sensor (Short), 29 - Tone Wheel. I'll clear them out and see what comes back.

Between Les Schwab and another subaru shop I called (Smart-Service), they both think everything is probably alright and it's just the computer freaking out. The excessive slipping in the front/rear throws it off. Had the alignment center at les schwab briefly look things over and they said it was ok.
