4eat torque converter question

I pulled the 4eat out of my '91 parts wagon tonight, and was being careful, but the torque converter slipped out about 1/2" and won't go back in. Everything seems to be aligning, the torque tube is still on the converter, but it won't seat back flush like it was when I pulled the engine.

What gives? Any ideas???

1) Stick a screwdriver into one of the TC to Flexplate mounting tabs as a "crank handle"

2) Spin it clockwise 3-4 times

3) Slowly turn it CCW while pushing up and in

4) repeat until it is fully seated...

had the same problem ended up that the input shaft "not the hollow oil pump shaft or tc" was not seating, and after 2 hours trying, i removed the input shaft and when putting back in, i kept pushing and turning and it went in the rest of the way. then i put the tc clipped to the oil pump shaft on and it seated no problem.

so on mine the input shaft had backed out about an inch during removal, and no spinning or pushing with the tc would seat it.
so try pushing and turning the input shaft till it seats, then the tc will go on with little force.

This thread helped me when I was forced to remove the TC.. When I pulled the TC the main (center shaft) pulled partially out. In getting it re-seated, I spun the shaft clockwise while at the same time lifting up and pushing the shaft towards the tranny. Beware that it appeared to seat almost immediately, however it needed to seat again. The shaft when fully seated protrudes from the 2nd (outer) splined tube by app 1.2 inches.

The TC slid in easily when I followed the previous procedure of turning 3x clockwise and then CCW. Each of the four dog ears on the TC protrude app 6mm from the face of the bell housing. This matches the depth of the flex plate and the engine block.. My Thanks to the previous posters..
