Yeah...not exactly sure how to get a Legacy to sound like that...

I know that when I get a 911 (which will be not too long), that it will "accidentally" lose its mufflers and have bypass pipes "accidentally" go in their place.

I''d like a 911 but I'm caught as to if I can/could ever afford to keep up with the maintenance on these.

If you read this months Excellence mag there's a 993 buyers guide and they (love the cars) but say to expect to spend a lot to keep them up. Lots of potential for major $$$ catastrophies etc. For example you do NOT want a C4 (AWD)...and so on.

Just wondering how you will handle going from bullet proof to something more touchy?

You guys should really hit a Rennsport Reunion next time it's around. I'm not a big fan of Porsches, but I still was amazed. I went to the first one at Lime Rock and there was another one at Daytona, plus, I think, a third somewhere as well. Porsche sent cars from their museum. The 1100HP Can Am car that Mark Donohue drove was there. Some driver for Brumos Porsche wrecked one of their 956s and they all laughed. Brian Redman and Paul Newman were hanging around and signing autographs. There was even a US legal 959.

I have previous Porsche experience...and I haven't met a car yet that I can't do the work on by myself...

And no, I do not want a C4 anyway...I want the lightest 993, which is the Carrera 2. 274hp and 2600 lbs sounds ooooh so fun...

And that's before the exhaust, cams, chip

If I were going to get a Porsche and not be able to get a 904, it would be a galvanized 911 S converted to Carrera RS spec, but with a 3.0 from an SC. I've always had a thing for that duck tail and the purity of the original 911.

From what I've read Nick is spot on as far as the best "modern" cars to own.

Nick I appreciate you can work on your own car but you can't make your own parts? I get the impress parts will cost you a left nut...

I'd want to check out pricing on AutoAtlanta just to go into it with open eyes - they have a catolgue for almost every car. Get the DVD off the website it's pretty cool.

Trust me Adam...I am well aware of most all aspects of owning a 911...as my dad just sold his a few months ago.

I have a pretty big "in" with the largest obsolete Porsche parts dealer in the country (as in I am personal friends with the owner), which happens to be about 25 miles from my home.

As long as you don't get into engine rebuilding, 911 parts are really very reasonable considering the initial prices of the cars and their prestige.

I am meticulous with the maintenance of my cars, and Porsches are
extremely well built machines, that really require little maintenance, and will run forever. The key is to pay a little more for one in good initial condition with certifiable records, and then keep up with the maintenance as my father did with his (which was a PCA Concours top 3 placing 1983 911SC).

Subies are great...but there is honestly no comparison between the exhilaration that one can have driving a 911 compared to a Subaru...they are just in a whole different league.

I remember when the 993 came out, and I decided that I had to have one...and since a good 993 costs about as much as a new WRX...I think it will be very obtainable.

You really would be better off getting a slicktop SC...as the body is essentially the same as the 2.7 cars, but already has the 3 liter, and the engine lids with the ducktail are easily obtainable.

Dual PMO carbed 3 liter with 964 cams....

don't get me wrong, the 911 is still a good car, but if i'm gonna go to a porsche. i'd go for an older 928S4. not as sexy, but a little more metal for me.

The 911 is an excellent execution of a horrible idea...imho

and 86ruguy...the 928 S4 is one hell of a machine...with probably the best sounding V8 outside of Formula 1.

Still not a proper Porsche though...

nobody can make that kind of power out of a N/A non-rotary engine, and the le mans knows plenty about that

comparison: when that porsche revs, it sounds the same as my former 91 RHD Civic SiR with B16A pulling 5300 to 8000 rpm, yes a JDM import car. but my car was kinda silent at idle until the vtech kicked in. i have sound clip somewhere probably on my other pc. 8000 rpm redline stock is damn fun, especially with lsd
