Can I spool turbo when in neutral or park?

Post by northupd@alumni.union.edu »

I am trying to diagnose a strange rattle under full boost
conditions. I want to be able to do so while I have my head poked
under the hood so I can see and hear up close. My turbo only spools
up when I am engaged in a driving gear (automatic). Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Get your head under the hood and rev the motor fairly hard/quickly
with the throttle lever under the hood. It should spool partway regardless
of gear selection.

I can't get any positive pressure this way though. Is there any way
to get full boost?
Could the rattle I hear be the sound of my wastegate? It only seems
to happen at full boost?

Thanks,
Dave

You must have a substantial load on the engine to get any real amount
of boost. RPMs are not the same as load. The pulses coming out of
the exhaust under load are very strong, whereas at idle, it's just a
breeze.

Without running on a dyno, or replacing the wastegate, you'll never
know.

I had that same problem also... removed the guard and
it dissappeared.

Although when I am on anytype of boost I do get a loud
scream that sounds like a jet engine. I know this is
the turbo spinning and creating boost but I have never
heard a factory or even many aftermarket turbos this
loud. What do other peoples sound like? (I'm talking
like as loud as 3 to 4 vacumes running at once) Also I
only have a K&N filter no other motor upgrades... yet

Can I spool turbo when in neutral or park?

With this JC Sports prototype intake, it's loud as hell. The
wastegate is VERY noticeable too, and sounds cool.

I've been removing heat shields too, blasted rust.
