2004 STI steering rack (and crossmember) on 91 L

I got an 04 STI crossmember and steering rack for my swap project. I searched and I could only find one person with the same setup and they didn't say how they did it. I have two questions.

#1 - How do I connect the steering column to the rack since the U joint won't fit? I was thinking of getting and STI U joint, cutting the L joint and having a shop weld the two up. Is there an easier way?

#2 - I'm having a hell of a time getting the PS lines to bolt up to the STI rack. Am I missing something really simple? I measured everything with calipers and it seems like the lines should bolt back up, but I can't get them to do it.
