EJ22T engine rebuild advice please!!
I just bought a 94 5spd Legacy Turbo it has 300 000kkms on it, but it runs great. Some old lady has been driving it for 14years.
I would like to return my new love to her original glory and give her a few upgrades while i'm at it.
Granny's car with a little boy racer flare
With the information that I have gathered reading here I plan to do the following work on the engine:
Remove the engine and heads
Have the heads P&P'd
Have a valve job done
Change Timing belt and any other low cost seal that I can
Change water pump, and install alu drive pulleys
Install group N engine mounts
Have the turbo rebuilt and increase boost to 10psi
Can anyone with some experience tell me what I am missing from this list, anything else that will give me a little more punch and allow me to fog it for a couple of years and 40 000kms at 10psi???
Also contacts for having turbo and head rebuilt??
Lots of people are almost giving away stock heads and turbo so should I buy them and have them rebuilt to reduce my down time??(since this is my daily driver) Bad idea to match newer heads on an engine with 300K??
Thanks for your time!!

You're list looks good.
Don't get the turbo rebuilt though.
It's a VF11 (pretty crappy lol). If you want something close to that stock size, you should buy the TD04 off of a WRX. It's about stock size, it's MUCH newer and it can usually hold more boost to redline.
Then if you do that you can install a top mount intercooler which will make it even safer to run more boost.

If you were going to do that much work to the heads, pick up a set of SOHC heads from a late model legacy. Head work is sooo pricey.. And the newer ones flow much better stock than your heads with a fair amount of work! There are a few headswap threads here...
I just had my stock heads cleaned/ground/pressure checked, when I go to better flow, I'll pick up a set of late model heads. You could also go to DOHC heads, but that's a bit more work than SOHC.
The Group N mounts are nice, rough, but nice remember the originals were soft to absorb vibrations... I've got mine, but love the result! hehe
The guy who rebuilt my TDO4 (I tossed my vf11 in the scrap steel pile) *didn't take but a couple days...
I think it was $325 and that's with a new impeller as well costing $85... I picked up a decent used one off ebay, of course it only had 10,000 miles.. haha but for $60 as long as it was rebuildable, I didn't care. Cheaper than a new one anyday.

Witchhunter performance did a great job on my fuel injectors, and provided me with a before AND after flowchart!
Rebuild was $17.00 ea and they were very quick.

I didn't write down these guys name, but if you want a full engine rebuild kit, with wiseco pistons, rings, wristpins, toga race bearing set and wiseco head gaskets...
It's an easy way to get the bottom end all ready to go with a full rebuild kit, but it isn't cheap.
about 1k shipped, but half of it is the forged alum pistons. I think it even comes with a timing belt.

Thanks for the good tips, Ill look on NAIOC for a used turbo and intercooler 2002 - 2006 WRX right?? Will deffinetly send the fuel injectors off to witchhunters. Don't now about 1k for the rebuild kit though, i'll call and ask some questions, maybe i can get the kit without the pistons, I kinda though the strength of this engine was the forged crank and pistons??
Thanks again, reasuring to hear that I'm headed in the right dirrection.

Like Phase II 2.5 heads?Legacy Rally Guy wrote:If you were going to do that much work to the heads, pick up a set of SOHC heads from a late model legacy.
If that is what you refer to, they are a MAJOR bitch to put on a closed-deck motor.
And don't bother with a TD04...they are a bitch to fit and aren't really an upgrade.
VF11s are tough little buggers. Just throw it back on, and if it pukes, pick up another one from someone on here for $50...

A VF10 would be yet easier yet...and flows a bit more...and can be obtained for like $100 or less.
And I did an FXT I/C install on a VF11, and it really isn't hard...just get a some radiator hoses and a Y-pipe and you are set.

VF10 has a 90* inlet, and a 90* outlet...so it looks pretty factory when installed, and will still play nice with the factory intercooler hoses.
This is a TD05...but it shares the same compressor inlet/outlet configuration as the VF10...

I am surprised no one has suggested the EJ20G heads, as these are one of the best upgrades that bolt in without major issues.
Although they will be a bit more expensive, the better top end is worth it.
Ask Jake. And review his dyno vs mine. The stock heads drop power at about 5200, whereas the 20G heads pull all the way to 6500.

Holy smokes!!! OK well so far I have concluded that this is going to be more complicated than making a list and executing it. Especialy since this car is my daily driver. So I found an engine alone that i'm picking up tomorrow, for 300$ !!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm soaking all of this in thanks.

ANY DOHC heads are going to be an upgrade. You will need to match the heads with a mathcing manifold thogh, be it topfeed or sidefeed injectors. and then you need to jet the sensors to plug in.
But.... Its pretty fucking easy in the long run.

Whoop, forgot something.
NA DOHC heads have a bolt that plugs the oil out that will go to the turbo. You can either drill and tap the bottom of the head, or tap the oil pan for the return.
Personally, I would tap the oil pan the next time I do it cause I tend to get too much oil out of the turbo and leak.

if the motor is running strong dont do anything.
put a intercooler
add some more boost
change the rear ex off the turbo to a bell mouth with flap.
all that right there should be good to go.
about the head porting, my father had done this to my stock heads along time ago, it was the first mod done to my car. it helped out the motor so much, if you plan on keeping the stock heads i would port them to gasket match and you should be good. plus with the other mods i listed, it will kick some ass.
then if you want to get crazy, you could scrap the sohc and get dohc.

He probably means swapping in a 3" bellmouth downpipe for your stock piece.
NICO's english is a little spotty (although, much better lately), but he knows his stuff.
NICO, you taking ESL classes
? Whatever it is, its working.

On my way
Well the engine is on the garage floor...... in peices!! Will be putting it back together with a valve job, piston rings and all new gaskets.
Picked up a Turbo back 3" bellmouth exhaust as per advice (no twin dump) but it was 500$ and that's pretty good because you guys have access to cheaper it it would cost me a fortune to ship cross border.
For now, will be instaliing a manual boost controler and gauge.
Intercooler in may, probably front mount because they look way sexier, and I don't want to modify the hood scoop.
Now that it's apart I migh as well put in a new cluch, does anyone know if a 04 - flywheel is any lighter than our stock. I know I'll try a search.
Thanks

Though, externally it can be switched fairly easy, I went all crazy on internals though, it'll handle much forced induction!!
