Well, its official starting tomorrow I am an employee of Lewis River Motors... A GM dealership in Woodland...

Not the first choice, but after what I said the assholes at the Subaru dealership I could expect a job there!

I am now the new Lot Attendant/ Detailer! My car ought to start looking pretty spiffy!

Alright... So I just embarrassed the main dude there... I believe he may have been the sales manager.

I walked up, he approached me and asked in a very awkward tone, "Is there anything I can help you with??"

I asked if they had any open position... He then asked what I had in mind. I told him, well, anything...

he had a very snooty look to him. He then asked "Anything specific?"

I said, " Whatevers available, Parts Department, Detailing cars before they leave, Lot attendant, customer service, anything really."

He rolled his eyes at me and said in a very condescending tone, "How old are you?"

I told him, 16... He said, "well, we only hire 18 and older... The only position available is for sales, and i doubt that would work. There is a lot to these cars."

I said, "I know all about these cars."

Hes all like, *eyes once again rolling* "Really, what exactly do you know?"

I then proceded to recite all the details I could remember about the models, Legacys, Imprezas, Outbacks, Foresters, and Tribecas...

including engine specs, trim levels, and ish-price.

I asked if he would like me to go into the rest of the models from 1990 on up? Or perhaps the international models.

i saw some of the sales guys behind him start laughing... He then said, "Hmph, we only have a sales position open and only hire 18 and older."

So yeah, that was that, and the sales guys were about 7 ft away.

That was Dick Hannah dealerships... I wont buy my parts there anymore, I drive over to Portland... If I go there and he is there I get some nice little glares and they are all assholes.

im still in the process of looking for a job, i have lots of things to do over the summer, like farm work and mowing lawns and such which pays the bills, but i need something a little less seasonal so i dont drain my bank account in the winter.
ive put in about 8 applications to stores and places, but no calls back, maybe ill do like you did and just walk in and talk to somebody instead of get an application.

Yeah I had gone with my friend to test drive the new WRX when it came out and my friend started asking me the specs on it instead of the salesman because he didn't know anything about it.

Then the guy was like "you should get a job here" and then I decided he was a complete idiot when my friend asked how much horsepower the car had and the guy responded "I don't know. I just think it looks cool so who cares!"

my first toy i ever got was a toy truck. ever sense then ive been hooked. i might not know every thing a certain model has, but ive been braking knuckles ever sense i was 6-7. i love the hands on. i would rather figure out how it works rather then read about it.


but asking questions is always good before you brake something expensive.

I've always loved cars... I remember when I wasnt even old enough to really read and understand, just looking at all the pictures in my dads car magazines.

But I sure am glad I found one...

When I turned in my application he told me that he had already hired a guy for the job but that turn over was really fast so he would keep me at the top of th list.

Then yesterday he called me and wanted to talk about the job. Today he told me that the guy just quit coming in and left.

Why wouldnt you at least call? that just seems rude to me.

^^ woa thats how I got a job as a lot guy at the Ford dealership here. The kid just stopped coming after a few days of work.

Lot job was a good one to help me through college, they gave me flexible hours and eventually they started letting me do dealer trades all over the west coast. Free road trips baby! I would always try to go over weekends and hit up ski resorts!

Well, today was day one...

School from 7:30-1:00

Work from 1:30-7:00

Tomorrow 8:00-3:30

I, um, skipped breakfast and to make it there on time... Oops...

Finally got to eat dinner at 7:30 when i got home! But it was a good day, the other morning lot attendant is 30 and looks like he is 19, he seriously looked about a year older than me!

I hope everything keeps going well, it was only the first day but I think I made a decent impression.

Oh and FYI everybody... Those goddamn Impalas and HHRs are Pieces of Sheeeat! I drove both today... I was far more impressed with the year old used KIA Sportage that I also drove... I thought that was really funny myself!

Work ethic is something that has been lost. I'm always amazed at how many people just don't show up to work or show up whenever they feel like it - and I'm talking good jobs, too. I swear, all it seems to take to be loved by bosses today is to show up on time, don't do drugs and bring drama and it almost doesn't matter about anything else because the competition is so friggin' bad! That said, I always do my best at every job and I'd still recommend that, as well.

Honestly, I busted my ass today... I kinda knew he was taking a chance hiring a 16yr old to move cars around the lots especially since they have to put me on insurance for the most expensive vehicle there... Most likely a new Denali.

I did my best to make my bays (I have two bays that I, and only I, am resposible for look a helluva lot better when I left than when I got there and did my best to make all the cars look best I could without him haveing to remind me about things, he checked each car in and out to make sure I had done it right.

Nice. Keep it up. And remember, there are going to be very bad days... ones that will just suck. But you still have to put your best foot forward and suck it up. No job is going to be perfect.

Oh, and stay humble (may not be a problem having the entry job) but don't think any jobs are beneath you. Just do your best at it and things will go good for you in life.

And, dangit, SAVE your money!!! I wish I had someone following me around slapping me everytime I spent money when I was 16... sigh.

Well, here is how I'm saving my money...

25% Goes into a savings account that I can't touch... Ever... UNLESS it is going into something that will MAKE more money.

25% Goes into Long-term Savings... So things like Car parts that I really want get bought out of here... But the money has to be in there for at least 2 weeks before it becomes touchable.

10% I can just blow... On anything, doesnt matter

5% Goes to education... School books, supplies etc.

5% I give away... So I can buy stuff for family or whatever...

30% Goes to needs... So gas, insurance, food...




Now I understand that this works in a perfect world... And I have some help for the needs part... Like mainly gas.

Excellent that you have a plan! Even better if you stick to it.

Very much IMO, lose the 10% blow away money. Don't get in the habit of blowing money away. Not good to reinforce bad habits, or encourage/fund them. I'd combine that with the needs category and call it monthly expenses. Live simply, it's way too easy to blow money on food (I blew a couple G's on eating out often, buying ribs, etc one summer) and gas (driving criss-cross the state for one party/function... at twice the speed limit). Your occasional splurges can come out of the monthly expenses if you can afford it.

And if you can save up money, use it to your advantage. Stay debt free, of course. But also do things like pay your insurance off 6 months - 1 year ahead. You save on the monthly fees and also rate changes from driving record blemishes until they redo the plan again. You essentially lock in the rate. My kid really helped with taxes this year, so that's the kind of stuff I'm doing with the refund.

Have fun. Starting out with good habits is definitely the best thing you can do for yourself.

If I dont have it I'm afraid that I'll have too much of a tendency to blow other catagories... I have a tendency to burn through it anyways...

I think I'll be able to control that better if i can get is out of my system.

Find a way to keep track of that blow away money and make sure it stays under your target number.

I have a Bank of America credit card and it's awesome. They have a part of the website that lets you keep track of all your expenses and personal worth. You can sign up your other financial accounts (savings, checking, loans, 401k, other cards, etc...) so you can see it all in one place. Tons of graphs and stuff to see what's really going on. And its free!
