Why am I seeing a LOT more SS cars destroyed right now?
As of today (3/8/8) there are 4 cars for sale in WA. that are SS that are totals.
This makes me sad.

Yes I have too many Subarus

Like Brett Favre said "all good things must come to an end". Although he wouldn't like it too much if we started removing parts from him. I remember all the good times I had with my silver ss but it didn't stop me from stealing the front bumper and support from it this morning. Too bad those four are totaled, but whoever totaled them probably walked away or were better off than if they were in a Festiva. These things hold up pretty good in wrecks. I don't think too many will be around in another 25 years so rock it while you can.
At least we can look at this way: our cars become rarer by the month.

because the subaru legacy ss was the car of brett favre.
4 cars destroyed & his number was 4 right?
since he gave up, so will all ss..es
and too bad the rarity does nothing for monetary value

I think the problem is the struts and brakes are aging. So people aren't keeping up with replacing these crucial components and they loose control or can't stop. I shouldn't really say this though considering how bad my suspension is. Then again it's just a plain old wagon

These cars are being handed down to their fourth and fifth owners, probably much younger, less experienced drivers, some of whom will not know how to handle the power it puts out. Have you seen how many WRXs and STIs get mangled every year? There's definitley no shortage of parts cars... those are the rich kids. The kids who can't afford (or whose parents won't buy them) an STI are crashing the Legacy SS.
Don't weep for the cars...there's plenty of them still, and every one lost contributes it's DNA back to the gene pool in parts. Every one lost makes your car that much rarer. Every one lost brings us closer to price appreciation. If you hold on to ANY car long enough, maintain it well, you'll see the asking price bottom out, then start to climb. As essentially the genesis of Subaru's Rally and motorsport heritage, our cars are significant, and I believe will soon start to go up in value.
Check out the prices on 1st gen Liberty RS's in Australia.... they bring AUS$ 7-9K on a regular basis, and are going up.

Unless oil keeps going up the way it is...then we're all fucked.

Re: Why am I seeing a LOT more SS cars destroyed right now?
They could have been SS owned by people who don't know their significance. Even fender benders will qualify a car as "totaled" when it's as old as ours. I backed into my roommate's girlfriend's car, and her insurance almost wouldn't pay for the dent to be removed because the value of the car was so low. They were going to total the car, and give her what the car was worth to put toward a new car, but in the end, they just got rid of the dent.dscoobydoo wrote:As of today (3/8/8) there are 4 cars for sale in WA. that are SS that are totals.
At some point, it becomes more costly to repair damage than it is just to buy a new car, and that could be the case... unless all these SS you hear about are *wrecked*.

lol, i dont think their is any demand for our cars among kids my age, over half the kids i know dont know what the hell a Subaru Legacy is, let alone an SS. STI is the only thing they know about Subaru, if that.Aerotech wrote: The kids who can't afford (or whose parents won't buy them) an STI are crashing the Legacy SS.
i did inherit mine from my sister ( im 3rd owner) after the head gasket went bad, but before my sister bought it for $800 when i was about 10-12yo, i didnt know what Subaru was.
unless my car is destroyed beyond my repair abilities, i will never be getting rid of it. it will sit in a yard for years if it has to, but i will always drive this car even if i get a newer one

I had a black 91 that was hit while it was parked in front of my house. The guy that hit it had some kind of siezure. That same car was repaired and painted then hit again in the same spot.ericem wrote:Wow. Further explain what happened?
The silver 93 I had was wrecked when I hit some stone landscaping blocks around 40 mph. I swerved to miss an old lady that pulled out in front of me right as I was passing by. I lost control when I tried to get back into my lane and went off the side of the road, hitting the bricks. I missed her...but it cost me my car.
Oh yeah, and while my 91 was getting the body fixed and painted the guy who was fixing it had his house burn down and his girlfriend died in the fire. When that car was finally wrecked I let it go with the interior, engine and everything to the dump. Now I wish I hadn't done that.
