How's it going Legacy Crew?

I own a 1992 Legacy Turbo (North American version) with 160hp. I'm
currently
in the process of trying to increase the hp and looking for other
modifications I could do for more power. So far I've installed a
Manual
Boost-controller, drop-in K&N filter, and did some exhaust work. I'm
trying
to get my hands on an intercooler seeing mine doesn't have one. I've
noticed
a burning smell since I've increased my boost to 11-12psi. I figure
the
turbo getting hot must be causing this smell that only occurs when
driving
hard. Does anyone else have this experience? Does anyone know aprox
how much
more hp installing an intercooler would give me? And how much hp
would I have
running the car at 13psi intercooled? Has anyone ran any 1/4 mile
times with
these mods done? I've noticed that boost fluctuates according to the
weather.
I'm too scared to up my boost anymore especially in the summer! Is
anyone
running 13psi without an intercooler in the summer?????
Any answers, specs, and modification recommendations are appreciated

Thanks,

Fred

For what it's worth the UK spec version of the car with the intercooler runs
to 197 HP as standard. Mine has had the ECU modified to give an extra 40 HP
by virtue of raising (I believe) the limit on the maximum permitted boost
pressure - I've been told that it's about 13 psi. The company that did the
work is called Superchips.

I guess that those mods would take the performance fairly close to the
UK-spec that I have - the only word is breath-taking. 245-ish HP makes
over-taking on our fairly crowded UK roads a pleasure ;-)

>Has anyone ran any 1/4 mile times with these mods done?

Nope but mine pull strongly all the way from 3000 rpm. Even in 5th gear at
close to 100 mph it pulls like an express train ;-)

Welcome Fred.

Intercoolers are no small feat to get working on these cars. The
early WRX and Legacy ones will work, but they're not bolt-in.

I'm sure the turbo is getting warmer with more boost, but i've never
noticed such a smell, at 11 or 13PSI.

Most estimates of horsepower gains after adding and IC are 25-40,
depending on how much boost and what other mods have been done. Even
a stock motor would benefit from the intercooler without adding boost.

I'd say 220HP, give or take a few, at 13PSI, but that's just an
estimate.

I haven't got around to doing any 1320 runs yet at a strip, and my
only experience with a G-tech was shady, at best.

Manual controllers have a hard time with weather, that's why i spent
$500 for the Apexi AVC-R and have never regretted it. It looks cool
and does a fabulous job.

I run 13PSI, even in the summer, but it's hard to reach that because
my exhaust is still stock and the turbo doesn't spool very high
unless i'm out on the autocross course really pushing it.

Check out Legacy Central for what i've done to my wagon and feel free
to ask me more questions.
