VF39 on a 1993 Legacy turbo?

Post by Tommio RS »

Hi there! I was wondering if i could swap out my old VF11 turbo with a VF39 turbo off an STi. BTW im running a Auto trans. If i were to perform this turbo swap or any turbo swap i would get a good turbo back exhaust, and an intercooler, WRX or AWIC style. I would NOT be running more than 15 PSI of boost. But ya. Can i swap my VF11 for the STi VF39? How hard would it be? How much more power would i gain? And the most important fact! How much more fun would it be!

Thanks!

Not a big issue to make work. I went to a Super 16G, and the plumbing would be the same. You would have to go to the mentioned intercoolers to make it worthwhile. And as you mentioned, a larger exhaust would have to be utilized also. You will also have to go with a boost controller and a fuel cut defender.
The injectors would not handle that power, so trying to see if the 440's would work with your ECU would be the mimimum size I would use.

I had to go with the 565's and a piggy back ecu unit to assist.

But since vf39s are cheap and plentiful, I would say go for it.

Sweet! Thats awsome! Im soo doing that once i gather up some more money! But my question is the injectors. What injectors fit? WRX/STi aftermarket. And ya. would i get performance closer to a WRX or a wrx/sti mix?

Thanks! I love that idea!!

very close if not better than a stock WRX.

The STI side feed injectors are what you need to get. NISMO has side feeds that fit as well.

That sounds good to me! As long as the car accelerates faster...like 2 or 3 seconds off the zero to sixty time ill be happy! But where can i find a used VF39 around?

Thanks!

ok sorry to take over this blog but anyway guys, is the vf39 plumbing the same as an td04? And will a stock 1993 ss ecu handle the 440 injectors?
and also on the injectors you would have to use an NA fuel rail off of an 1990-1991 legacy right?

A few people including me are running 440's off the stock ej22t ECU.

I'm running a EJ20G with its grey-top 440's off the SS ECU, & to my surprise it runs OK...

Hmmm very interesting... BXSS from where did you get your injectors?
But now i wonder if i should run the VF24/VF28 because my car is an auto and spool up time means alot to me!

I have a vf39 too. One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the intake plumbing is different. The stock turbo has a 90 inlet, the vf39 doesn't.

These are the injectors I used:

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... highlight=

"theglobesavingsgroup" on ebay sold me these for a good price.

I have a HKS fuel comp and I am only pulling like 8% on the lower end and then pulling 4-5% mid and 2% at the high end so I bet you wouldn't have a problem using just the ECU and letting it compensate over time. I only am boosting 1.1 bar.

yeah I am pretty sure it hits 15 psi @ 3500 or a little earlier even. I have a dyno chart that I will post later if you are interested, I have to get it off my laptop.

Greytops came on the EJ20G ('95 JDM WRX) I have in my SS.

So you could look for 93-96 JDM WRX injectors to get these.

I have a '98 STi Intake manifold & it has Yellow injectors that I think are slightly larger than 440 - I think they may be 480's

You may need something to fool the maf a little, but for the most part, yes, you can get the numbers you are looking for from the stock computer.

K. New question here! I was wondering...Is it at all possiable to Hybrid a VF11 with another VF series turbo?? Because it REALLY like when the stock turbo kicks in at low boost. Basiclly i just want a turbo that have like 1 bar or higher that can still offer fantasic low end power!

Really i just want a torque car...more torque than horsepower. Is that out of the question for a turbo appliaction?

Thanks!

Definitely not out of the question. My vf39 car made 235 tq and 216 hp (still trying to get a new scan of my dyno chart, sorry).

I turned up my boost to about 1.3 bar ~19 psi and while it hits full boost at 3k its feels strongest 4k-5.5k.

Not at all! It's all in the tuning though, which is hard to really do on a legacy without going standalone.

For instance, this is an 05 STi with exhaust, intake, and great tuning:

See thats what im talking about! Crazy low end torque! I love torque if you can tell. So with a host of mods i can get good torque and power without using a new ecu.

Can you hybrid a VF11 with any turbo?

It's not worth the hassle to try and do. The VF11 has its limits and that's why it's just easier to pickup a VF39, TD04, or the most preferred TD05-16g. The only one you can't just bolt right on is the VF40 from the new Legacy GT cars. Totally different setup on the turbo.
