EJ20G -92, valve lifters (HLA) click, some questions.
Hi there.
First off, sorry for creating a new thread on the subject, but hear me out:
A while ago, my Legacy started clicking from the heads. Assumed it was the lifters, and after reading on this forum I reached the conclusion that it was the HLA's that were acting up.
Because of the fact that it is quite a big operation on the EJ20G, and the fact that it leaks a bit of oil, I decided to pull the engine.
Now, I've searched the forums and read a bunch of the threads on the subject, but it rarely touches on the EJ20, so that's why I started a new thread.
The click from my heads was intermittent. It was rough when cold (in winter), and got alot better when the engine warmed up, going away and coming back when driving.
I tried putting in some HLA-cleaning additive and draining the oil plus changing filter, twice, to no avail.
Questions I have:
1. How do I pull the HLA's from the heads? I've read that you should just pull on them with pliers, but I've tried and they didn't come. Now I'm wondering if the EJ20Gs are different?
2. Can I check the function of the HLA's when removed from the heads? Can I clean them in some way and put them back in, or will I have to replace them? How do I then know which ones to change, don't know which ones were clicking, so is it possible to spot them?
3. Finally, a question that doesn't have anything to do with the lifters but to save time and space, I'll ask here:
Which seals can you change without splitting the entire engine?
Don't have the time to split the engine, but would still want to change as many seals as possible.
Thank you for your time,
Petter

Haven't found a factory service manual during the 2 years I've owned my car. Perhaps I'm just blind...
Anyone else have any ideas about the HLA's?

I know there's one posted for the 1992 manual for overseas versions....but not sure where that is right now.
