Where are you in Canada Adam? I'm live in the Toronto area.
I've checked into getting a custom IC and everyone seems to tell me the same
about $1,000cdn. I think that's a bit steep and that's why I'm trying to
track down a used WRX IC. I have a guy looking for one from Japan but I
haven't heard anything yet. Where were you able to locate your IC and how
much was it before labor?

Did your boost drop as a result of installing the IC???

I recently got a 95 WRX Intercooler installed on my 92 legacy. It took
the shop several hours to modify the IC so that it fit right. I hear
the older than 95 ICs from WRX fit better but I'm not positive. I would
also suggest asking a local performance shop how much a custom IC would
cost. My total IC install including the purchase of the IC came to just
under 700 Canadian, but I had a huge discount on the labor, only being
charged for about half the time spent. This is why I suggest also
looking into a custom IC. As for the horsepower gains, I probably got
5-8 hp but have discovered that I am running really low boost, only
about 6.5psi so I will be able to give you much more accurate numbers
after my boost controller arrives.

Are those early WRX and Legacy intercoolers that would work in our cars
Air to
Air or the Water to Air type? And which is better? You say it's not
bolt-in.
Exactly how difficult is it to get an intercooler to fit? Is this why
you
haven't installed an intercooler in your car?

You lost me a little bit with the hp estimates. Stock is 160hp and you
said
gains of 25-40hp and then after you said a total of 220hp at 13psi.
Were you
saying the 25-40hp gain would result just by installing the intercooler?
Seems like my cars state is much like urs with the exception of my
exhaust
being done and you having an electronic BC as opposed to my MBC. So how
much
gain would you say that 13psi gives you??

Welcome Fred.

Intercoolers are no small feat to get working on these cars. The
early WRX and Legacy ones will work, but they're not bolt-in.

I'm sure the turbo is getting warmer with more boost, but i've never
noticed such a smell, at 11 or 13PSI.

Most estimates of horsepower gains after adding and IC are 25-40,
depending on how much boost and what other mods have been done. Even
a stock motor would benefit from the intercooler without adding boost.

I'd say 220HP, give or take a few, at 13PSI, but that's just an
estimate.

I haven't got around to doing any 1320 runs yet at a strip, and my
only experience with a G-tech was shady, at best.

Manual controllers have a hard time with weather, that's why i spent
$500 for the Apexi AVC-R and have never regretted it. It looks cool
and does a fabulous job.

I run 13PSI, even in the summer, but it's hard to reach that because
my exhaust is still stock and the turbo doesn't spool very high
unless i'm out on the autocross course really pushing it.

Check out Legacy Central for what i've done to my wagon and feel free
to ask me more questions.

Ya I live in Ottawa, I should drop by and show you the install next time
I am down. I have no idea if the boost dropped because of the IC
install because at the same time as the IC install I got a boost gauge
installed. So I never knew what I was running before. Once the manual
boost controller is on thou everything will be running a 13 PSI so I'm
not too worried about current boost levels. The car is definitely
quicker thou with the IC and the Turbo scream is a lot louder which is
always a plus :) I got my IC from London, there are many wreakers
online so it shouldn't bee too hard to find one. I got my IC for about
185 pounds. The price wasn't too bad but the conversion killed me, dam
Canadian dollar! So the IC cost me about 400 dollars (Canadian) and the
install was about 260 dollars (yes Canadian again) but the shop gave me
a huge discount on the install. I probably took them about 7 hours to
get that WRX IC modified and installed and they only charged me for 4
hours. If you are interested on who did the work you can find them at

Sounds good Adam I wouldn't mind checking it out. I've heard that the IC
might actually drop boost pressure allowing u to turn it up higher but I don't
know if it's true. Too bad u didn't get that boost gauge first. I'm using
the Hallman Boost Controller and it works pretty good and it's cheap to boot!

Looks like I have to check out some wreckers online. How do you find them??

A guy I know told me about a guy named Barry that works at Promax!! I
contacted him about a month ago and he said he would look for one for me but I
still haven't heard back from him yet! So was he the one that supplied you
the intercooler pipe also? It sounds like a pretty good deal. He said he was
looking for a complete unit for me but he doesn't know the price yet but
guessed that it would be about $500. You make it sound so easy that you
installed it yourself! Was it easy? What year WRX's or Legacy's have the
Ver.II intercoolers or do they all fit the same?

How much difference do you think the intercooler did made for you? Do you
have a MBC too? Your pretty close to where I live!! I'm in Brampton.
