Does anyone know if the brand-new WRX turbo would bolt straight on to the
Legacy's ej22t engine without problems? I'm wondering if this would be a good
turbo upgrade for my car. Is the WRX turbo a significantly bigger and better
power producer?

The latest one have less power than the earlier models. Look for
prior to 2001 but no older than 1998. And yes it will bolt straight
in.

If you live in North America, I would get a EJ20T for the Non-US version of
your car. It is very easy to swap in. 4 wires are different from your
harness so you could do it in a day or 2. The motor is fast!
Email me direct and I will give you contacts in the US and New Zealand to
get parts. Good people to deal with.

Mark,

Is this because higher compression ratios are achievable with the 2.0?

higher compression ratios are achievable with ANY engine.. it's just a
matter of how much you want to spend. one reason that the 2L is better is
the fact that is is DOHC and HAS THE POTENTIAL for more power then the SOHC.
it can also rev higher i believe.

I am not sure the ratio is, I know there is a big difference in power.
I would spend the money in the first place to do this upgrade then spend
lots on improving the 2.2. There is more potential I feel in the 2.0.

Just curious..How much would it cost to get everything you need? Does it make a difference if the car is wagon (auto) and not a sedan (manual)?

Thanks

It could. I traced the harness for the 5spd. Motor would be about 1200 us and comes with turbo (your choice of 3) intercooler, flywheel and engine wiring and everything else that normally is on a engine. You still need afm, intercooler pump, intercooler radiator, computer, ignitor (for sparkplugs). All of this can come from New Zealand and would set you back about 1000 NZD.
Plus shipping. (shipping the motor from Cali to Canada cost me $120cdn)

Actually, if you have a turbo now, you have a very strong transmission.
1000 is about 750cdn. I use the same clutch as I did for my 2.2, it was
rated for much higher hp. If you are going to replace your clutch, dont go
with a Subaru clutch, go with the ACT clutch (same price).

I understand the Act clutch disk is actually the same as the dealers but they
give you a better pressure plate than the dealer does.
