two radiators???

Post by mike p. »

i had my grill off playing around and i happened to notice a small
radiator in front of the normal radiator. this smaller one sits off
to the far right(facing the car) and the hoses run into what i
thought was a transmission fluid filter. anyone know what this is.

oh, btw, 1992 4wd legacy turbo sedan. and no, i don't have an
intercooler....

It sounds to me as if the previous owner had a tranny cooler fitted. Is it
an auto tranny? Do the lines bypass the original tranny cooling lines going
to the radiator? The original owner of my turbo sedan had one fitted the day
after he bought the car. The clutch packs in the tranny are just now
starting to go(at 140k miles). I think if I hadnt fitted
exhaust,intake,intercooler,and12lbs of boost, the tranny would still be
going strong. This seems like a good idea for any auto tranny Subaru.BillC

two radiators???

Post by Josh Colombo »

The two radiators alot of people are talking about. There is a separate radiator for the A/C system. Standard, there is the main radiator, with a metal tubing line running through that radiator. The second radiator is for the A/C coolant system. There were not an oil cooler or separate tranny radiator that came stock. They may have changed things with the turbo cars, but I am pretty sure the config I said above is how the N/A cars are.

yes it's an automatic. there are hoses that go directly to it and
from it to a filter looking thing(looks KINDA like a fuel filter
layed on its side, cylindrical ya know). incidentally i did find a
brief mention of this in my haynes manual as an oil cooler. that's
all i know though. do they come stock or are they pretty much
aftermarket?

That thing on its side is an external transmission filter. They were added on because of a poor design in tranny design.

no I do not believe so, because the line that the filter hooks up to is the main radiator. What they do is run a separate tubing around inside the main radiator for the transmission. It's not a separate radiator. As far as I know the two radiators up front are the main one, and the one for the A/C

two radiators???

Post by Samuel Barrett »

Don't make me have to pull out my manuals on you.:o)

When I did my head gaskets I had to remove the "main" radiator and the tubing Mike is describing sounds very familiar. Driver side? Below the battery? If so that thing runs to the main radiator, if you have a/c and you play follow the leader, it should lead to the smaller one up front.

The tranny cools itself by sucking off some of the cold stuff from the engine radiator. The filter is the ATF filter me thinks. But the manual, curiously, mentions nothing about the filter.
