Swapping in an 2006 STI crossmember into 1990 Legacy.

Swapped in a 2006 STI crossmember.









Bolts right in.

Issues that needed to be addressed.

Need to use about 1/4" thick washer for the swing (?) arms and the STI one has a fatter "head".

If you want to use your old steering rack, you need to cut out a bunch of metal on the STI crossmember, no structural issues would result. For myself, I don't have power steering, so the metal tubes will be removed from the steering rack.

Sway bar........ Hmmmmmm, gonna have to figure out how to mount the stock one, or find a STI front sway.....

Takes about 2 hours with air tools to do.

doesn't need to be an sti front sway. In fact and STI front sway won't fit without the sti control arms. you just need the right shape of bushings. Whiteline's part number is W0405-[mm].

WRX wagon control arms will fit in the crossmember.

The steering rack mounting points are different so I think you'll have to use an 05+ impreza rack and fab the u-joint thing to match up to your column.

The steering rack mounting points were identical.

But.....

Which WRX wagon control arms because up to 04 the wagon arms were the same as the old GC arms, which should be the same as the Legacy Turbo arms.

ALMOST identical. The bushings are known to be different.

they're the same except for the front bushing, which is a few mm wider on the 02+

You could just pick up some superpro 3-piece urethane bushings for a wrx and swap those in. The hardest part is getting the old ones out, but sharp objects and things like fire tend to help in that regard.

Also I still don't think the old brackets are going to work with the new x-member.

Air chisels make short work of the sleeved bushings. I had to massage the WRX bushings into my Tleg crossmember. It involved a floor jack and a very large and long punch to line them up....
