need advice on buying wagon

Post by George »

I need a wagon for my "active lifestyle" (kayaking, hiking, camping,
etc.) I'm thinking of buying a late model (93-94) Legacy wagon. Save
me from getting a Taurus!!!! My priorities are safety, reliability,
economy, room. Are there any particular trouble spots I should be
aware of? How reliable is the turbo? Did the 93-94 models have
airbags? I've heard the mileage is not great for a 4 cylinder. Can I
get an idea what gas mileage people are getting with a 5-speed?
Thanks.

George, Turbo Legacys are very reliable. Gas mileage is not great 18-21 with
normal driving. 22-25 on the open road. Turbo Legacy wagons do not come with
a 5-speed, auto only. It seems the auto tranny on this car is the weakest
link as far as reliability.93-94 will have driver airbags. They are very fun
to drive. BillC

George;

I'll probably be questioned about this one but if you're looking at
93-94 then maybe a Loyale 4x4 wagon is more up your alley. I guess the
thing is if you can't go for an Outback, the Loyale 4x4 provides a fair
bit of ground clearance for the off the beaten track roads. It has lots
of room (not as much as the Legacy/Outback wagons). We have a 94 that is
being replaced by a 97 Outback. I find it a bit underpowered (turn off
the A/C when passing) but good on gas and very versatile.
