Looking at getting a Mtn. Bike... any suggestions?
Well, I only work about 3 miles away from where I live, so i was thinkin that it would be oh so easy to just ride a bike to work... And it would help me get into better shape, and I could start actually taking my bike to the mountain again... I used to a long time ago, then kinda fell out of it.
I had up until about 6 months ago had a Trek 820 ( i think it was an 820) damn good bike. And I was looking at some newer ones that I could really put through the ringer...
Since I dont have that one any more I'm going to get on this summer. I want to get one thats good and will last me awhile...
I would prefer the new style disc brakes... I heard they dont fade as easily when on steep decents and arent effected as much by water etc.
Probably a hardtail... I never liked how full suspensions would dip when you pedaled down hard.
But the front shock is nice...
So what do you guys think... my budget is gonna be about $500-600... at least thats what I'm gonna shoot for.
I was looking at the Trek 4300 DCS and the Trek 6000...
Suggestions?
(And no, this isnt a save the environment, ride a bike post... this is a I'm, um, well, "big" and like bike riding... so lets put two and two together)

I personally ride a Klein Attitude but they are getting harder to come buy since Trek bought Gary's ass. I still think they're one of the best hardtail frames made though.
Besides that, Specialized is the way to go, they are the only real innovative mass market bike company out there IMO.
I'm personally not a big Trek fan but they do have some good bikes.
In your specified price range, the Hardrock:

I picked up a Rocky Mountain Trailhead last year. It was just a hair under $1000 but it's a solid ride. There are a few changes I've been reluctant to make becase I really don't ride as much as I would like.
I was a professional tech for some 5 years and did some pretty aggressive downhill. Getting back into the XC game was a hard decision. Especially when my last XC bike was an 18lb Stumpjumper. I think the RMR is around 22 or so. At some point, I'd like to build a new wheelset and shave some weight. It's got the new Hayes Sole's, which are a LOT nicer than the HFX9's, but I notice a lot of inadequacies with part stiffness when I think back to my downhill rig. It takes time to get used to it.
I'd seriously look into Specialized and RMR. I never liked Kona or Cannondale very much, so I'd stay away from them. I saw a lot of frame failures. Chances are, that won't happen to you, but it's just from my experience.

Hahaha, that used to always crack me up ( hehe). My buddy had a Cannondale and it had disclaimer stickers telling you to inspect the frame daily for cracks before riding, then my Klein had a sticker showing 14 US patents for welds and a lifetime replacement guarantee.

I've only cracked a couple Mt. bike frames but back when I raced ABA BMX as a kid and teenager I used to burn threw a frame every year or two. I actually busted the head tube on an Elf 24" cruiser I had one time, came up short and tagged hard on a 30' double at the Gold Cup Qualifier in Eugene, OR. and ripped the forks completely out! I bled a little but didn't break anything, which was surprising because I probably should have busted at least my wrists.

Zach... um, what?
And I'll take these into consideration, I'll probably run by the local bike shops around and see what they have.

... lame.
....rea..ad ..my ..build....journal... it ..is .........what bike...i have.
lame
1. dont buy a Kona
2. Specialized are good bikes,
if you are looking to just go fast for 3 miles, i would get an old road bike frame and make it into a Fixed Gear.
only then will you be extreme..
it would only cost like 50, thats what mine cost.
easy to build and they are rediculous
