TIRE SHAVING in Portland? Who does it?
I know there aren't many shops that do tire shaving anymore since most people don't trust retreads but I need to shave some winter tires for use in autocross. Anyone know of a shop that still have the equipent?

Winter tires usually have softer compounds that stick real nice when they are hot. They wear out fast but that's ok.Imprezive wrote:Wait, you want to shave winter tires for autocross? Is this some kind of rain/snow autocross?
I'm sure there is someone up there, since portland raceway is right there...

Today I swapped my snow tires off the car because it hit about 97* ish and they were all over the road.
Snow Tires + 97* F Heat = Wear + Nastly handling... too soft

The problem with the snow tires when it gets hot is that the tread gets floppy. If there is no tread (shaved) they stick like fly paper. They wear out fast though but on a little autocross course, who cares.
As far as sidewalls, 50 series are pretty common. And I believe it's the steel belts, not the rubber that give the sidewall its stiffness.
