93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by gtcrispy »

Ok, first off I need a new transmission. I've been told 1500 for a rebuilt then there is labor on top of that. Is it possible and has anyone ever attempted a automatic to manual conversion on this car? Its the US 93' Legacy Touring Wagon.

Thanks
Kevin

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by Josh Colombo »

ahh....kevin,

Thinking after my own mind. I am wanting to do this as well. I believe there was one person on this list that did do the conversion. He lived up in Canada I believe, had a black turbo legacy, Matt, I believe was his name. Here's his site http://www.jonesboy.com/subaru/index.htm I would like to hear from him too as to all the specifics he did.

But just from memory and what I think would need to be done, transmission, gearing in rear end, ecu, shifter setup/linkage, new dash (don't know if that's a must), Don't know if the half shafts are different for the auto or manual. There's probably some other stuff, but I really don't know, which is why I would like to know everything, so i know as to what I'm getting myself into.

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Damn, sounds involved and considering I'm 16, don't have the money yet for the transmission just looking at some alternatives. Tomorrow I'm going to a race shop with my friend so I maybe they will know something. However I doubt it considering its more of honda type place but you never know.

Thanks

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by jason grahn »

Kevin -

Which shop are you going to? A lot of the guys in our area (seattle, tacoma,
everett) know next to nothing about subarus, but they'll feed you anything
and everything that you'll listen to.

I know 2 people that would have that sort of swap information. #1 is the guy
that did Wills transmission rebuild and clutch swap: Richard Buckner. Ask
Will what he thinks of Richard. Definitly a guy in the know. Also the
driver/owner of my rally team. email address is rbuckner@royalmoore.com; he
answers on the weekdays. :)

#2 would be Lee Shadbolt of Hairpin Racing (http://www.hairpinracing.com/) .
He's another racing pal of mine; I believe that he used to have an automatic
in a Production GT class Impreza, which was later upgraded to a 2L turbo w/
a manual transmission. email for him is shadbolt@hairpinracing.com

I'm sure it's not an easy swap, in fact i'm pretty positive of it. The most
i could say is don't spend your change, it'll eventually add up and you'll
eventually get your swap done. So your dad let you keep the car 'eh? Cool.
:)

Good luck!

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by gtcrispy »

Well me and my friend are going to R Sports in Bellevue. However like you said I don't think I will talk to them about it. Its mainly for my friend who has a civic.
Thanks for the two contacts. Hopefully I can learn some stuff about the expenses and difficulties associated with doing the swap. The reason I thought about it was first off to see the price difference between getting a rebuilt auto tranny and then the possibility of a conversion and also the fact that a manual would be more fun to drive.
I guess its time for me to find a more consistent job so I can bring more money in that I can save. I also better tell my grandpa to start turning my stock portfolio around and bring in some more $ :)
Anyhow thanks for all guys help :)

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by acroxford@hypermall.net »

I have done the conversion and it is a bit of work I would consider
using a n-a tranny (with mounts for the hyd cyl) and a n-a clutch with
a heavy duty pressure plate as the turbo clutch is expensive. Any way
you go you will need a new flywheel do NOT use a resurfaced flywheel!
You will have to be sure to check the ratio on the gears and match the
rear diff or change it. The axels should fit and you will need the
pedal assy for a MT model and both cyl. The wiring gets tricky as it
involves the clutch sw.,lock out , backup lights ,neutral sw.,cruise
control,ECU, and depending on MY the air contol valve. It would be
best to have wiring diagrams for both AT and MT. I can furnish them if
you undertake the project and can help with questions.

Al I would be interested in any help you can provide. Do you think the N/A tranny is strong enough even for higher hp applications? I don't know when I'm going to do this, I guess it depends on if I can source the parts easily or not.

Thanks again for the info

I'll be in contact eventually, may not be right a way, maybe a couple months down the line.

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by gtcrispy »

What I want to know is what kind of prices am I looking at and where do I go about locating and getting them. As you can probably tell I'm sort of lost because my mechanical knowledge is somewhat slim though I would love to learn more.

Thanks Al,

Kevin

93' Legacy TW Auto to Manual Conversion?

Post by acroxford@hypermall.net »

A good place to start on parts would be SuperRepair in Boulder CO
they are supposed to be the worlds largest independant servicer and
they part out 3-4 cars a day and have a pretty good selection of parts
if the shipping would be within reason I bought my turbo motor from
them. You would need a new flywheel and a heavy duty pressure plate I
will check on the prices on these with a friend and let you know. I
have a n-a transmission in my EJ22t-Imprezza with a chromoly flywheel
an ACT clutch and RS disc at around 300hp and things are staying
together so far at 13k miles and it has been driven "briskly" shall we
say. Just called someone and he will tear down the transmission have
the gears treated and rebuild it with the later model syncros and
reassemble it and sell the upgraded transmission for $1600. He said
the HD clutch would be $500 and the light flyweel $450. From what I
have heard the Legacy turbo clutch costs more than this but you might
want to check.
