That's pretty awesome. I think we have a bit less opportunity in Canada, but I might go check my pile of junk mail that awaits recycling......

Sending packages doesn't do anything - the PO just tosses them, but there's nothing stopping you sending something (or nothing) in the envelope.

ha ha that would be sweet! if only there was like...really old people porn. then this would be hilarious!

uh... Doesn't do anything?

sending the packages, especially the heavy ones (soon to come lol) ensures that postal workers get their worth from the companies that use direct mail.

The companies DO receive what you send them, it's been tested

i highly doubt that the PO tosses packages, and im just waiting on some junk mail.... :P

THEN there will be awesome...ness

They DO NOT. They USED to. Maybe. New regulations allow the PO to toss them. The barcodes for the envelopes do not scan for packages and they are discarded. All you're doing is annoying a PO employee and helping the Dumpster contractor.

psh :smt019 prove it

The barcodes don't even do anything,
they are there to look "official" every barcode on EVERY direct mail from a specific company is exactly the same. at the most it is for identification of where to send the (return) the mail to.

No, it's an ID on the type of mail it is. That's why the barcodes are the same. But that's common sense, but since we're trusting random internet sites: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_356.html

This will all go much easier if people stop doubting me.

Ahaha, classic Steve quote.

He's right though, that bar code does designate what kind of postage it is and if the automatic sorting machine sees that code associated with a box it will kick it out. Now if you were to fill the envelope with leadshot - double envelope it for security, then it'd likely go through.

I love the idea, but today's automation does put a hamper on your options.

If you don't believe us, go ask your mail man next time you see him or go into a Post Office.

Send them powder* and they'll probably clear out their offices - better than a brick which would be discarded at the building's mail department. Oil sticks to paper well, make sure you wear gloves just in case they have no sense of humor as much of the world seems not to.

*I don't actually recommend this. Only included for purposes of humor.

yeah it sounds like, as long as it fits inside the envelope then it will go through no matter what is inside. the only thing you cannot do is attach the envelope to an object or package.

this sounds like a great way to get rid of cds tha i do not like or no longer work anymore, i have a ton of WAY outdated games that will no longer work on my pc i need to get rid of. i can just break them in half to make them fit

Just tape it to a "flat rate" envelope or one of those priority envelopes.

Fill with concrete.

Send.

Even if it doesn't work, someone has to pay for the mail man to pick it up.
