MPG Question

Post by Tommio RS »

Hey people! My question is, How good is your gas mileage? Cuz i just did a MPG test on a full tank of gas. My results were scary!! Not in a good way. I'm averaging 300ish KM's to the tank!

My driving habits for this test:

Keeping the RPM'S under 2300.
Easing on the gas paddle
Trying to NOT brake around corners to maintain constant speed.
Only going 80KM's at the fastest!

This test is basically how i have been driving for the last 6 months

I should through this out there tho. I did get some major work done to the car about 3 months ago consisting of complete engine reseal, New knock sensor, New coolant temp sensor and one other sensor.
But still i know there something else not right here?
And yes the check engine light is still on. And its some code about the emission system. The # is unknown right now, but its going to change fast!

People what is your average MPG???

Cuz 300km to the tank on my 93 Legacy Turbo sounds wrong to me

Thanks!

This is sort of a random question, but kind of on topic.

My fuel gauge went out awhile ago, so now I just reset my trip meter every time I fill up and I remember to fill up at around 220 miles because that's what the gauge used to say when it got to 'E.'

Here's my question, when I do fill it up at E, it only pumps in 10 gallons to get back to full. Don't we have like 15 gallon gas tanks? Why does it read empty when there's still 1/3 of a tank left?

My friends 95 Impreza does the same thing...

Wow. I manage about 100 less than that at 3/4 of a tank (about 10 gallons). I need to do something about that. :P

I'm N/A and 250 per tank is my high side.
it equates to roughly 19 mpg.
BTW, to the OP, you ask for MPG but all your measurements are metric which would be KMPL (KiloMeter Per Liter) not MPG (Mile Per Gallon)

For the most part I drive with complete disregard for mileage and I average about 26mpg, but my driving is about 95% highway with the cruise set at 74mph. I'm pretty sure with some pedal control and the cruise set five under instead of five over I could do 30ish. Even on the weekends with alot of around town driving I dont go below the low 20's.

Just for reference, I'm running a JDM EJ20G swap @ 14psi on the stock turbo ECU with 440cc injectors (quite rich on boost), 3" TBE (no cats) and the stock 5MT.

I normally get about 11-12 gallons when I fill up from E.

It's probable the sender is not calibrated/setup properly.

For reference sake, I've run my old 93'L down to where it was running off fumes - i.e. stumbling, hardly accelerating, on it's last legs, etc. and when I filled up I put 13.5 gal. in.

MPG, I get around 19-23 around town doing the redlight racer thing.

I averaged 250-60 per tank with the EJ22T, a bit less now with the 2.5, but it's getting better as the engine gets more miles on it. I'm seeing about 230 per tank now.

I seem to get pretty good fuel mileage with my FWD subaru:

91L AWD, 4.111 5sp, and stock EJ22T gets me around 25/26 mpg with the foot to the floor.

93L FWD Stock gets me 34/36 mpg in the summer and 33 mpg in the winter (when its 30 deg F and below).

I have the same set-up as All-Talk - a EJ20G on a SS ECU & city mileage is not good, but I got about 25MPG in mixed city/HW driving on that set-up to my surprise.

My 2.2l PII OBS-T gets great mileage if driven like a old lady.
I drove from the Bronx to Quakertown PA & back (240-250miles round trip) on 7.7 gallons of gas - a little less than a 1/2 tank.

I watch my mileage like a hawk 'cause it's crap! Always has been since I got the car, 94 ej22t wagon, and recently it's sunk to about 12. It's fun watching the needle drop on just short local cruises - not!

Trying to diagnose, but leaning toward vacuum or wastegate problems.

For reference sake on just about fumes my tank comes in @ a little over 13 at refill, so 13.5 is probably what subie tanks hold, at least on non-foresters.

My '99 Impreza has sucked up as much as 15.x gallons running it until the fuel light turns on.
The wifes '96 Impreza has the little tank - 13.x gallon.

I thought the SSs had a 15.9 gallon tank.

i seem to get pretty good mpg. mixed city and hwy i usually fill up around 330 so miles. but on the straight hwy runs (nothing but crusing speed) i go well over 400 to a tank. btw my fuel guage is horribly innacurate so i just go for the light.

Pure city driving at 4300 ft gets me ~17 mpg. Pure highway driving is ~24 mpg. 94 TW is completely stock (for now), except the 4.11 5MT.

I think the secret is in the WRX transmission. Slightly taller gearing must make a difference

I usually fill up between 280-290 miles, which isn't so bad.
The fuel senders either need to be cleaned or replaced, the gauge is inacurate 90% of the time.

My usual fillups return 27 to 29 mpg and that is mixed. All highway doesn't seem to matter a whole lot as I seem to run faster.

After doing the downpipe I picked up 3 mpg on a highway trip getting almost 32. Then I finished the exhaust and got 29 something out of that mixed tank. I tend not to run mine hard, but at least there is something there when I want to.

Hmmm soo i guess im not getting the best KPG/MPG. So 300 km's to miles is 186.4 miles.... SO not very good! and thats not even letting the turbo spool up! I REALLY need to fix that.

OOO for the first while of owning the car i was averaging 200kms to the tank!

Have you checked your O2 sensor recently?

In 2005, I went from getting 20 city mpg with my SS to 13 because of the O2...

Your code is probably from the purge canister solenoid...

Both my 94's get filled when the trip hits 320mi unless the low fuel light comes on.
Its worked out to an average of 24-26mpg pretty consistently. I've gotten as good as 360 miles to a single tank in my white car. I drive about 75 miles per day, 90% highway.

For whatever reason, quite a few times I got about 200 miles to a tank during the coldest parts of winter. I couldn't figure out why.

I'd like to get a wbo2 and an safc and lean it out a bit and see what i can improve by doing so.

As a comparison to the more "modern" cars, I usually get 375-425 per 16 gallon fill up. This varies between winter and summer, naturally.

That usually comes out to 25-27MPG.

I have done just over 475 on one tank, but that was with a heavy majority of freeway driving.
