emergency brake shoes failed?

Post by kleinkid »

Crusin down the highway, 60 mph, hear a bam, bam, bam, rap, rap, rap, coming from the rear, right side maybe, start to pull over, about 50 ft. before I get to a stop the right rear locks up into a skid, get to a stop safely to the right of the fog line. I'm thinking better not be my newly transplanted rear diff, driveshaft broke hanging down? No. Had it towed home, $30, AAA finally get to use it. Never broke down on the road in a Subaru before. I'm guessing it is the emergency brake shoe system fell apart and the shoes popped out into the rotor. I replaced the shoes when I put the '02 WRX rear diff in. Thought the emergency brake job was a pain when I did it. The right side was the first side I did. Probably did not get the springs secured properly. I'll take it apart tomorrow and see what happened. Man, its embarassing being broken down on the highway, flashers on, getting towed.

If I could never do one thing again, it would be swapping out parts to the e-brake system. I had to hybridize an 04 Forester XT and a 98 Forester S e-brake system when I swapped hubs. Such a PITA.

Carnage

Got it apart and the tone wheel was in four pieces and fell out upon removal. The ABS sensor was bent nearly in half, the two larger round springs that go over those pins and are held in place by the cups, were destroyed. The new brake shoes were damageed enough that they will be replaced. I think what happened was that those cups over the springs may have rotated and allowed the spring to release off of the pin, which led to a series of unintentional parts modifications, or breakage. The surface inside the rotor was not damaged though. Ordered parts and will have to take off the hub to be separated and the tone wheel installed. I know better now to make sure everything is orientated properly. May even put a dab of Locktite on the pin where it meets thecup.

The big thing with those cups is to make sure the pin from the back is seated in it's little groove which is 90 deg off from the slot that allows everything to come apart.

When I did mine, I took a picture of the parking brake assembly an printed it out so I had something to look at when I was putting it back together.

I got the parts now and am going to take the hub to a machine shop to get the new tone wheel on. I suppose there is a posibility that I put the emergency brake parts back together correctly, but the incident started when the tone wheel broke apart. It could have been damaged when I had the hub was taken apart to replace the bearing and seals. I will be sure to verify that the anvil heads on those pins are rotated 90*, and are seated in the little grove on the cups when I put it back together.

Are you putting in a new wheel bearing? I had heard that when you take apart the hub, the wheel bearing can sometimes come apart, and can not be used again.....however I have no confirmation of that.

The wheel bearing will need to be replaced according to the machine shop. Which sucks because it was new a few weeks ago. It gets destroyed during removal.
