stock rods, maybe eagle H beams. im still thinking on it
20g heads with reground cams
Link G3 stand alone engine management
AVO 255 fuel pump
565cc sti
20H intake
AEM wideband

well i figured the only weak point of the bottom end is the pistons. all the rest are forged.
why where you breaking rods? bad tune or over rev?

I think a bunch of folks have broken rods on ej22t.
The rods are forged but are the same as the old design ej18 rods & are just plain old.
The Wedge's RS hybird (rs25 guy) recently put a hole in the block & he had stock rods & Wiseco pistons for a while.
He says the ej22t is crap & went ej257.
Nico had the Autotronic & put a hole in the block due to a broken rod.
Why would you stick old rods in a rebuilt block when everything else is new?

Its true that one should replace the rods with Eagles while in there since they are cheap. At the same time, breaking rods has a lot to do with tuning. Just because someone has the goods doesn't mean that its all set up correctly.
STi rods aren't a whole lot different but people lay down almost 500whp on them

i see what you guys are saying. yes tuning plays a very big roll in making a high powered reliable motor.
the reason is.... well.. i dont know lol. i figured that the rods would be fine and do the job well. i guess sense in the future im plaining on making it a 400 plus hp car i should just get the rods.

Wedge's car has been around for years of autocross & track abuse, if the tune was bad he would blown up years ago.
As for Nico I thought Innovative Tuning programmed the car for him - I could be wrong.
The STi's rods are not much different than the old ej18, EJ20, ej22e, & ej22t rods but they are different & fairly fresh - not as many 150K mile+ STis around as there are Legacys.
The rods are cheap + you are already in there, you may as well do the best job you possibly can...

ya i see what you mean.
im looking up eagle h-beams and i dont know if the ej20's ans ej25 rods are the same.
and if they use the same bearings.

Ej18, 20, 22 are the same. 5.137" length. That's what I've been using.
The fact that I've never seen a dyno sheet for nico's car tells me it has never had a custom tune. Most off the shelf stuff tunes aren't ideal. Its so important to tune for that particular car. I've seen cars with almost identical setups be almost 40whp different on the same dyno on the same day by the same tuner. One motor can like more timing than another even if they are the same.
Too little timing can put a much greater bending moment and shear stress on the rods. With a potent enough setup and enough time, they break.
Anyways, with what you are already putting into this car, and what you most likely will after that, why the hell not get some rods for it. If you look hard enough you can get them for $300. I paid $350 at my door.
You'll most likely get tired of the 16g anyways after a year and will be buying something bigger and badder since you'll already be setup to do whatever, aside from injectors. Ok maybe a few other things too, but you get the idea.

yep. ok well you jerks talked me into it! another thing to get. but it will be almost a fully built bottom end excluding the crank.
rods
pistons
standalone
those are the only things i need to get now. i already took the heads down to a mechine shop to be checked for worpage and to be hot tanked. cause my friend was using a 2.5 head gasket to up the compression but the pistons where hitting the heads. plus there was a carbine 2mm ring around the dome and i got a little worried.
but there good and flat. 20 bucks latter

holy cow. thats alot of power!
ya i wasn't planing on changing out the crank. i cant wait to drive it when she done!
its going to be really hard to be easy on the motor for 500 miles. ill just drive it alot after work to break it in quicker.
then the tuning starts....

im soooooo happy, now the pistons are the only thing pausing me from tearing into the motor.
