compressor removal

Post by jefferson »

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if it was possible to remove the stock compressor housing while the turbo is still in the car. I know it is kind of an odd question, but I would like to remove it and do some clean up and porting on it. If I have to remove the turbo to do it I don't think I will mess with that right now. Thanks.

Uh, not really... and its a peice of cake to remove.

Just unbolt the dp, then undo the coolant lines, there is one on the bottom that just comes off when you pull out the turbo, then the bolts,

There is one under where the dp is, and 2 or 3 that arent too hard to get to on top of the up pipe.

Oh and dont forget the oil line, it bolts (with a bango bolt) onto the head. Make sure when you put it back on that you put one copper ring between the bolt and round thingy, and one between the round thingy and head.

I can swap one in about 20 minutes, its really not hard... assuming you already got the chimney off, those are a bitch.

Hope this helps!

I forgot how IHI's look, but with a Mitsubishi turbo (td04, TD05, TD06....) you can remove the compressor housing / bearing cartridge by removing the v-band clamp that holds it to the exhaust housing - the up & dn pipe bolts never have to come off.

Removing the turbo will allow you to do a up-pipe port match on the turbine inlet, port the e-housing, + port the compressor.

Then again while the stock turbo is off you could just slap a bigger turbo on - VF10, TD04, VF8, VF12, TD05, GT35R...:).

it would be safer for you to take the turbo off and take it apart.
Taking it apart in the car you might ding a corner on the compressor wheel and then your screwed.
